Why are you learning Spanish?

  • Did someone else make you sign up for it?

  • Did you choose it out of curiosity?

  • Do you already have an interest in it?

  • Is it to fulfill a credit requirement?

There are so many reasons for students to learn a second language. Turn and talk and see if your reason is the same as the people sitting around you. If you're learning remote, you can engage by talking about it with a friend, sibling, parent, or adding a comment to the lesson post.

How do people benefit from learning more languages?

It's important for the things you spend your time on to have purpose.

Get out your brainstorm and the notes you took from the videos you watched.

Check off or highlight 10 reasons that are most important/interesting to YOU.

Create a TOP 10 poster for learning Spanish. Make it organized and attractive. Give it a logical title.

Share your posters with others and talk about it in class. What reason sounds the best to you? Adopt at least 1 reason to learn Spanish and use it to remind yourself when it gets tough why you're doing this!

Part 2

Language Hacks:

Say this out loud to yourself: I don't have to be perfect, nor flawless when I speak Spanish, just effective.

This means that as long as you can make yourself understood, you're off to a great start. If an English learner says to you, "You knowing where is bathroom?" you will understand what it is they need and be able to respond.

Watch at least 2 of these videos of tips for learning a second language. Write down some of the tips you think fit your learning style as you watch.

Graded Discussion:

In our online learning platform (Schoology or Google Classroom), discuss which language learning tip(s) you will commit to trying this year.

Your goal may be to become bilingual-- able to speak 2 languages well. Or maybe you want to be multilingual?

Polyglots are people that speak several languages well.

Watch at least 1 whole video. If these people can speak ALL these languages, all of us have hope for learning Spanish.
