Stan Mark is an exploration of the youth's infatuation with Mark McGowan;
the memes, celebration and glorification of our premier.
The film sought to uncover some of the reasoning behind this explosion of appreciation and unusual level of investment in politics in young people by talking to experts, young people themselves, and contributors to this pocket of the current Western Australian culture.
As a two person team of Brad and Lliam, we decided to share responsibilities rather than designating roles, meaning we both captured sound on location and worked on post production, both independently and together.
On Stan Mark, we wanted to create a polished and professional piece despite incorporating footage from sources of various quality and style, finding a consistent presentation while allowing the diversity in filmmaking and participatory style to remain present.
With the film rotating around a large set of interviews, we found ourselves with a busy filming schedule of on location recording. Trying to create as many options and contingencies as possible, we tried to record each interviewee with lapel microphones, as well as boom mic and camera audio as a fall-back. Dealing with gear failings and production issues, we were unable to use lapel audio for each of our interviews, making our backup sources invaluable.
Post production started with creating an appropriately organised session, pulling apart overlapping audio clips and separating different speakers and rooms to be processed separately.
With the fast cuts between many speakers that the structure of the film relies on, creating space for each voice without obstructions of one another was vital to keeping the production clean before processing our tracks.
With so many different spaces in the documentary, processing each separately and still sitting together cohesively was the main challenge of mixing the project.
As we included audio from phone footage and interviews in noisy spaces, reducing noise and treating voices to cut through and sit comfortably above the music was our focus, while still letting the compositions bring a positive energy and fun vibe to the project as they were written to.
