Production for Purgatory initially involved only 3 animation students, while each had strengths and weaknesses in their own abilities the task was quite demanding for that amount of workers. So turning to other students from different disciplines or in other trimesters of Animation, Purgatory was generated to showcase the idea of PTSD.
Not only did the crew had create magnificent personalised artworks but they had also delved into the workflow and pipelines that of an animator in the games industry. Having little to no knowledge for Unreal Engine, they were put to the test in learning the technical aspects of storytelling and developing a game in under 12 weeks.
The Story of 'Purgatory'
In the peak of winter, 1918. A Large collier ship named 'Cyclops' is sailing through the Caribbean carrying an allotment of coal and 306 souls. Amongst them, a man seeking reckoning for his mistake that caused the loss of a ship and all souls on board the year previous.
He himself a veteran of the Second Boer War and the opening stages of the western front. During the great war he commanded a platoon of men, however on May 22nd 1916 during the Battle of Verdun as he became one of only three members of his rifle company left alive after a failed push, he then was medically discharged with a diagnosis of shell shock he was sent for treatment. Despite having gone through the treatment he would be unable to take up a command again as he was heavily burdened with the horrific memories. He then was posted manning a lighthouse on a small island and would only be responsible for himself.
During the winter of 1917 on a stormy night he fell asleep. The beacon failed, a lightning strike hit the lighthouse tripping all the circuit breakers. An Investigation found that he had fallen asleep; however, it was found that the incident still would have happened due to the generator being damaged resulting from that lightning strike.
He still feels responsible and guilty, he believes it to be unfair that he is unscathed by the events of his young adult life. As it so happens the judgment is upon him to figure out his path of self-condemnation or self-forgiveness and deal with life the best he can.
