Job Description

I work with local farms and rural land owners in improving their water and soil quality.   Our agency helps them look at alternative management that would increase the health of their livestock by 

Education and Training

A bachelor's degree or higher that includes a major field of study (including 300 level courses) in soil conservation or a related ag or natural resource discipline such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, ag education or ag engineering.  The study must include 30 semester hours in a natural resource or ag field, including at least 12 semester hours in combination of soils and crops or plant science of which 3 semester hours must be in soils and 3 semester hour in crops or plant science.

Wages

If you are starting right out of college, it will depend on your GPA, a lower GPA would be around $22,660/yr (Grade 1, Step 1).  if you have a high GPA, you could start at $34,916 (Grade 5 Step 1).  From here the wage would increase with each promotion and with each in grade step.  If you are willing to move around and you seek out new opportunities with in the agency,  you can increase your salary.  

Career Projection

There will always be a need to find more sustainable ways to produce food for our growing world population.  Providing education and assistance to the public will become more and more important as the population grows and our resources become strained.  Recently our agency been able to post positions around the country to back fill existing positions.  

Job Highlights

I really enjoy working with landowners / farmers and seeing them get excited about practices that have helped them get closer to their goal.  I get to spend a lot of time outside walking fields, visiting farms and looking for opportunities to help. I also like knowing that I have helped restore and protect wildlife areas.  

Job Challenges

There can be quick deadlines and sometimes the paperwork can be overwhelming. I have had many jobs in the past, and I can say this is by far the best opportunity I have been given.

Advice

Spending some time volunteering in a local office.  This will give you valuable field experience as well as growing your networking skills.  With a very competitive application process, this could set your application above the rest.
