Vocab Paint Chip Challenge

Vocab Paint Chip Challenge

The graphic organizer on the left was modified from one found on the EMC2 Learning Resource website. This vocabulary exercise is designed to help students connect words from their everyday language to terms learned in class. To use this activity with your students, first fill the bottom boxes of the paint chip strips with vocabulary words students are learning. Do not fill in the remaining boxes. Instruct students to fill in the uppermost boxes, starting at the bottom with increasingly weaker synonyms as they progress upwards. The word in the uppermost box should be a weak synonym of the vocabulary term in the bottom box.

💫 Spinner Wheel 💫

This online spinner wheel is a fun tool to use when providing spontaneous opportunities for students to practice using academic vocabulary. Customize the spinner wheel to display vocabulary words that your students have been studying. Spin the wheel! Students then either verbalize or write sentences using the spun word or image. The default spinner wheel contains 7 slices, but spinners can be customized to include additional slices. Add a second wheel, with additional vocabulary words, to add even greater sentence complexity. Wheels can be saved for use at a later time when you use the Google sign-in.

Flaticon

Easily add visual icons to your Google Docs and Slides with Flaticon. On a page full of text, icons can help emphasize main ideas by drawing attention to particular concepts. Additionally, icons make presentations more memorable by triggering various visual associations in our brains. For English Language Learners, icons provide useful reading comprehension clues. The bonus: Flaticon's colorful icons are both fun and beautiful. Check out the storyboard activity below.
