Cyber Sandwich is explained in Chapter 20 of the EduProtocol Field Guide Book 1.

Cyber Sandwich

Cyber Sandwich is the EduProtocol to use when students need to compare and contrast. Some teachers believe that Cyber Sandwich is the easiest EduProtocol to prep for—simply choose two sources of information for comparison and the rest is up to the students. In pairs, students divide up the work reading & analyzing the teacher selected sources of information. Using the Cyber Sandwich Google Slides template, student 1 takes notes on source #1 while student #2 takes notes on source #2 (10 minutes). Next, students compare their notes and highlight the similarities discovered on a shared slide (5 minutes). In the last step, each student writes a paragraph comparing the two teacher selected sources.

Effect Size

A Cyber Sandwich combines elements of so many highly effective learning strategies like note-taking, scaffolding, summarization, reciprocal teaching, and feedback. The effect sizes of each technique, as determined by John Hattie's Visible Learning research, are listed below (links provided):

Reciprocal Teaching: 0.74

Summarizing: 0.74

Feedback: 0.62

Scaffolding: 0.58

Note-Taking: 0.51

For reference, an effect size of 0.40 represents one-year of growth per student.

Identify, Verb, Finish

Students who struggle with topic sentence creation might enjoy the IVF method. First identify who or what the paragraph is about. Add a verb indicating what the “who/what” has done or is doing. Finish the idea.

Frayer Models

Listed on a USC Foundations of Reading Instruction course handout, the following vocabulary instruction strategies are labeled as less effective and a “waste of time:”

  1. Asking “Does anyone know what ___ means?”

  2. Having students “look it up” in a typical dictionary

  3. Activities that do not require deep processing (word searches, fill-in-the-blank)

Created by Dorothy Frayer and her colleagues, Frayer models have been used for decades to help students develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary. The EduProtocols authors have adapted the 4-square format to suit the needs of other subjects as well.

The above site will identify Tier 2 vocabulary in copy and pasted text.
