Iron Chef

Probably the most famous of all EduProtocols, the Iron Chef is basically a gamified jigsaw activity. Modeled after the Iron Chef TV show, students collaborate to give the judges delicious dishes (slides). TV Iron Chefs use kitchen tools and ingredients to transform the episode's secret ingredient into spectacular plates of food. In the classroom, Iron Chefs use Google Slides and teacher selected sources of information to create a spectacular presentation. Whereas TV Iron Chefs cook collaboratively with their sous chefs, classroom Iron Chefs work in groups of 4. Each of the 4 students create their own slide in the shared group slide deck. Each slide is different, yet all about the same topic. When the Iron Chef TV show secret ingredient is chocolate, each plate presented to the judges should highlight chocolate. When the classroom Iron Chef activity topic is Vincent van Gogh, each slide should be related to one of his artworks (Work samples below).

Iron Chef is explained in Chapter 26 of the EduProtocol Field Guide Book 1.

Hero's Journey is explained in Chapter 12 of the EduProtocol Field Guide Book 2.

Hero's Journey

In this EduProtocol, students apply the Hero's Journey narrative story map to expository topics. Example: connect the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly to the various stages in a hero's journey. The Monarch population decline is the call to action, protected habitat spaces in the US and Mexico are helpers, and the return involves the reduction of pesticide spraying. After students complete the Hero's Journey storyboard, they're ready to write an expository paragraph about the topic. Hero's Journey EduProtocol: Informational Writing in a Narrative Format.
