Grilled cheese is a great combo of carbohydrate and protein. Check your fridge and cupboards to see what else you can add to this warm, cheesy sandwich.
What isn't there to like about grilled cheese? Ok, maybe it's a stretch to call this life changing, but it is an easy, nutrient dense snack that you can make in 5 minutes or less. Do you have any soup on hand? Serve your sandwich with a mug of steamy soup.
Yield: 1 sandwich
Ingredients
1 or 2 slices of bread - whole wheat, white, sour dough
1 tablespoon softened butter
1-2 slices cheese - cheddar, swiss, munster, colby jack
Optional butter boosters:
⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon parmesan cheese
Optional fillings:
1 teaspoon pesto
5 or 6 spinach leaves
3 or 4 tomato slices
3 or 4 avocado slices
Instructions
Preheat a frying pan or plug in the griddle and set the dial to 300 to preheat while you assemble your ingredients
If you are choosing optional butter flavor boosting, mix the garlic powder and parmesan into the butter
Spread 1 Tbsp butter (or butter mixture) onto one side of each piece of your bread
Place the buttered side down onto the grill. Gently place your choice of filling ingredients on the bread. Place the other piece of bread, buttered side up, onto the filling ingredients.
After 3 - 5 minutes, check for golden brown color or desired doneness.
Flip the sandwich slowly to retain fillings. Cook another 2 - 3 minutes until golden brown.
Plate, cut, and garnish with extra filling ingredients
Serve as is or with leftover soup or chili.
