Weekly Update
September 23, 2019
Dear King Families,
I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful weekend! This week there are two important parent events that we hope you can attend. Tonight there is a meeting for 7th grade parents about the trip to Cow Island with Rippleffect in October. They will share information about their program and what to expect for your student. On Wednesday we invite all parents to join us at 6pm to hear from King's leadership team, meet our new Assistant Principal, and learn about our goals and priorities for the school year. Refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you!

Expedition Highlight: Matinicus 8
"ReThink ReCharge ReAct"
In this expedition, Matinicus 8 students become authorities on one of our planet’s major dilemmas, Global Climate Change. We guide our research to answer the question, “What energy sources will most sustainably take us into the future?” For fieldwork, professionals who work in various fields will present their technologies and we’ll take field trips to a wind farm, solar farm and USM. In social studies, students will be assigned an energy source to research, and uncover its economic, environmental and ethical pros and cons. In science and math classes, students will investigate the history, causes and impacts of climate change as well as the energy conversions and physics of wind turbines. In English Language Arts, students will read the anchor text, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, as well as practice persuasive writing techniques. In Engineering Design students will work in teams to design, build and test wind turbines. The knowledge gained is then synthesized and used in rounds of whole-house Energy Debates, which are judged for accuracy, conciseness and ability to defend your energy source (even if you don’t agree with it.) Our culminating event is an Energy Symposium, where students will present their findings to the members of our community.

Attendance
Being a part of the King learning community means that every student is an important and valued member. It is our expectation that students attend school every day unless they have an excused absence. Upon returning to school students are required to have a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian.
Maine State Law and the Portland School Board of Education define an excused absence as:
- Personal illness
- Appointment with health professional
- Observance of a religious holiday
- Family emergency
- Planned absence for personal or educational purpose (pre-approved by administration)
- Educational disruption as defined in Maine Law
Absences for other reasons are unexcused.
