2 new After School Clubs -sign up now!

We are excited to announce two FREE after school clubs starting on Wednesdays later in March.

Ukulele for Beginners

Would you like to learn how to play a ukulele in just five weekly one-hour sessions? Lee Urban of Ukuleles Heal The World has taught hundreds of folks to do that. You’ll learn lots of chords and lots of songs and be able to play on your own or in a group. If you don’t have a ukulele, Lee can provide one for you during each session.

Dates: Wednesdays, March 18, 25, April 1,8, 15 (5 sessions)

Time: 1:30-2:30pm

Mahjong for Beginners

Mahjong is a tile-based game that was developed in China during the Qing dynasty and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. It is commonly played by four players. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a degree of chance. The class will be taught by Claudia Sperry.

Dates: Wednesdays, March 25, April 1,8, 15 (4 sessions)

Time: 1:30-2:30pm

Complete this SIGN UP FORM and return it to the Main Office by Monday, March 16. Space is very limited so the sign up form enters you into a lottery for a space in the club.

Sign up forms also available at the Main Office

A huge thank you to Melissa Knoll and the Parent Crew for organizing these clubs!

A huge shout out to Ms Myers' class for going outside today and picking up litter around our campus!

Important MEA Information

The Maine Educational Assessments (MEA) includes required assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy, and Science. Thes test, called the eMPowerME assessments, will be administered at King from March 23rd through April 1st. Over those two weeks, students will be testing for portions of three school days. Here is a more detailed outline of the testing schedule:

  • Moxie, Kineo, and Matinicus teams: testing 3/23, 3/24, and 3/25
  • Sebago, Moosehead, and Monhegan teams: testing 3/30, 3/31, and 4/1
  • Make up sessions 4/2 & beyond

The eMPowerME assessments are aligned to state and national standards. These assessments help to identify the areas in each subject where a student needs additional support and where he or she has mastered the content and can be challenged to go deeper into the subject matter⎯information that is useful for parents, teachers, students, and school administrators.

While no single test can give a complete picture of achievement, when combined with student grades and teacher reports, it can provide important information about student progress.

King’s commitment to rigorous, authentic and engaging learning expeditions prepares students well for the eMPowerME assessments. You can also help to prepare your child by ensuring they are well rested and at school on time. Please reach out to Peter Hill, Teaching Strategist, at hillp@portlandschools.org or (207) 874-8140 with any questions you may have about the eMPowerME assessments.

Thanks to everyone who signed up to help with the bake sale at the Maine Democratic Caucus on March 8!

REMINDER TO FAMILIES

Please do not enter or park in the bus loop between 7:15-8:00am and 1:30-2:45pm

Seeking Umbrellas

Spring expeditions often mean that our students are outside on damp or rainy days. If you have any umbrellas or ponchos that you'd like to donate for fieldwork, we'd appreciate it. Please bring to the main office at your convenience. Thanks so much.
