Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are already in the midst of February! The wintry, cold weather made the first week of the month interesting and short. Below is a message from PPS about the remote learning day last Monday, with an opportunity to give some feedback. Like everything during the past two years, we continue to learn and adjust.

Thankfully the number of positive cases at King has dropped significantly , but it is still important to regularly monitor your child for symptoms and keep them home if they are not feeling well. It is very important that we continue to follow all health and safety protocols. Please remind your student that effective mask wearing remains important.

Unfortunately, we are often up against challenging situations that arise from different forms of social media. For instance, in the fall we experienced vandalism in our bathrooms in response to a national TikTok challenge. We just learned that there there are TikTok videos that challenge their viewers to take increasing doses of over-the-counter Benadryl to induce hallucinations. This is obviously very dangerous and wanted parents to be aware and talk with your children.

As a parent, I understand the uphill challenge of monitoring the use of social media, but it is important to talk with your children and make them aware of the complexities they must navigate responsibly. We fully support this messaging at school and actively work with students around these issues.

Next month we will offer a virtual opportunity for parents to join a Parent Crew meeting. We hope to share some updates and get your feedback on certain topics. Stay tuned for more information.

Thank you for your continued support, especially in difficult times. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions.

Caitlin LeClair

Survey on Remote-Learning Snow Day

See the message below from Portland Public Schools

We want your feedback on the remote-learning snow day we had on Monday, Jan. 31. Remote-learning snow days are student attendance days, so don’t need to be made up at the end of the school year.

We realize that remote instruction is not a replacement for in-person instruction and is more difficult for our younger grades. To help us understand your perspective and improve remote-day learning, please fill out a survey we sent to families on Friday, Feb. 4, asking about your remote learning experience this week. It's important that families complete a separate survey for each child as their experiences may differ. We welcome your feedback! We have sent a similar survey to our staff as well.
