Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We were excited to welcome students back to school earlier this week. After being away from school for a while, we are supporting students in remembering and practicing our health and safety protocols. Please monitor your child's health and do not send them to school if they exhibit any symptoms. Please remind your student that it is important to adhere to all health and safety protocols. We appreciate your support!

We continue to experience a high number of tardy students. We open the doors at 8:05 and students can come in, eat breakfast, and get ready for the day in their Crew classroom. Please remind your student that school officially starts at 8:20am. Additionally, there is after school extended learning four days per week (M,T, TH, Fri) offered by all teachers. If you need more information about the extended learning schedule for your child please contact their Crew teacher.

In the midst of winter we are in need of new or gently used snow boots, gloves/mittens, and jackets. Any donations (in youth sizes) are greatly appreciated!

Have a great week and please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions to kingsecretary@portlandschools.org.

Moxie 6: Recipe For Identity

Moxie students are currently engaged in an expedition that explores their cultures and identities through food. One of the final products is a cookbook where each student contributes a page with a recipe, a narrative , and an ingredient profile. Your donation will support us in publishing a colored copy of the cookbook for each of our 80 students.

In addition to being authors of our published cookbook, students are learning about local food, regenerative farming, and combatting methane with seaweed. Students are learning to reduce their food waste by cooking with leftovers from school breakfast and lunch. They are also meeting with local farmers, restaurant owners, and food writers. They are using survey results local high school students collected in order to propose school lunches that better represent the students’ cultures.

Our students are engaged with meaningful, authentic work. We are excited to help them celebrate their hard work with their own copy of Recipes for Identities.

SeedMoney Crowdsourcing Campaign Update

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who generously supported the KMS SeedMoney Herb Garden Campaign! We are thrilled to announce that we raised $1815 in donations, 227% OVER our original goal of $800. In addition, we have been awarded a SeedMoney Challenge Grant of $300 and a SeedMoney Geographic Interest Grant of $300, for a grand total of $2415.

We are looking forward to warmer days when we can get this project off the ground. Already dreaming of springtime? Stay tuned as there will be lots of opportunities for community involvement as we start to build, plant, and maintain the gardens. Wondering what this is all about?
