Weekly Update

October 21, 2019

Dear King Families,

I hope you had a good weekend! Progress reports will be sent home this week. A guide which explains our grading scale can be found later in this newsletter. We are very excited because this week Kineo students and teachers will be traveling to Cow Island with Rippleffect later this week; Moosehead's trip was postponed due to the nor'easter. We will be scheduling their trip for next spring.

Please join us for the first meeting of King's Parent Crew on Tuesday, October 22 from 6-7 in the King library. Come find out how you can help support King teachers, students and staff. Many thanks to parent Victoria Parker for taking the lead on this!

Check out this awesome video from Moosehead's Rippleffect experience

As you may have heard their trip to Cow Island was postponed due to the nor'easter. On Wednesday, they did an urban scavenger hunt around Portland doing small acts of kindness, interacting with the public, working on team building and mindfulness. Moosehead will travel to Cow Island in May, 2020.

Join us for Parent Crew Night

Tuesday, October 22, 6:00pm

We are so excited to kick off the new Parent Crew next week and look forward to sharing the vision with you. As many of you know King is a special school with 480 students, 21 primary languages & 40 spoken, 57% of racial diversity & 43% white, on average 50 homeless students, 58% free & reduced lunch, 30% ELL, 47% multilingual homes & 31% students born outside of the US. These stats are just a few of the things that make our school unique & the amazing place it is. But they also come with some great needs.

Parent Crew's mission is to lift up the equality for all students and give them each an equal experience throughout middle school. We can not do this alone! Please join us for one hour on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 6:00pm to learn how every parent can help. This is not a large commitment, I truly believe even the smallest amount of time can create great impact! -Victoria Parker, parent of a 8th & 6th grader.

Expedition Highlight: Monhegan 8 Happitude

This fall, Monhegan students are exploring how a strong sense of purpose contributes to an overall sense of well-being and happiness in their expedition, Happitude. Students are exploring the guiding questions, "What is happiness? " "What makes people happy?" and, "How can happiness build community?" Students will engage in community service, conduct surveys, and evaluate their own understandings of happiness throughout the expedition. The expedition kicked off on Friday, September 20th during the global climate march which functioned as an information-rich introduction about how a common purpose might impact a person’s overall happiness and sense of well-being. During the expedition, students will volunteer their time to help align their own personal goals and sense of purpose with others while helping to foster their own sense of well-being and happiness; students will also be encouraged to seek out their own volunteer experiences outside of school. As a final product, students will synthesize their understanding of happiness into an informational brochure available around King.

On Friday, October 18, students heard from community members about their personal experiences as volunteers with many different organizations and causes.

Student Handbook Focus

Each week we will highlight a portion of our handbook.

Progress Reports will be coming home this week. Parents can refer to this guide which explains our grading scale. Note: due to the Cow Island Trip, Moosehead and Monhegan will distribute Progress Reports next week.

Thank you to everyone who helped at our 1st ever Clothing Closet Organizing Party! The Clothing Closet is stocked and we're very excited to start distributing.
