Weekly Update

June 10, 2020

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that this is the last parent newsletter for the 2019-20 school year. It has most definitely been a unique year, and we are so grateful for your support and engagement in the KMS community throughout this entire school year! To our 8th grade families, I want to thank you for your all that you and your students have contributed the past three years. We will miss you and wish all the best of luck in the future.

We are proud of our students for engaging in Sun School, participating in optional learning and continuing to connect with their Crew teachers over the past two weeks. Regular Sun School attendance has remained above 85% and many students are taking advantage of the optional learning activities available on our website.

Last week we shared that we will not be shuffling the 8th grade teams as we historically do. To clarify, the students will stay together, but they will have new teachers. Our teachers will be putting together video messages to share with students next week.

There will be a virtual celebration for the 8th grade students and parents on Monday, June 15th at 5PM. Please use this link to join the celebration. This will include recognition of the hard work of all of our students and a special farewell video.

Next Wednesday is the official day for laptop collection for 6th and 8th grade. Our 7th grade students will keep their laptops over the summer. All students will be able to retrieve materials that were left in their locker. We have done our best to collect materials and try to match student names to locker numbers. Yearbooks will also be available for pick up on Wednesday for families that have ordered them. Please read this important document that outlines the process for all families to follow.

We would really appreciate getting your feedback through this parent survey about your remote learning experience at King. . The feedback we collect will be used to inform decisions we make for next year. At different points throughout the summer we will invite families to attend virtual Parent Crew meetings to provide updates as we learn more about the reopening of school in the fall.

Thanks again for your ongoing commitment to KMS and your continued support! Please have a safe and restful summer and I look forward to our continued partnership throughout the summer and in the fall.

It is common for families to not have enough food or other things they need at home, especially when children are not coming to school. If you or your family does not have enough food or other things your family needs to get by, please email Ms. A-L (Amanda Atkinson-Lewis) at lewisa@portlandschools.org.
