December 2, 2020

Dear Families,

I hope that everyone is healthy and safe as we enter into the month of December. We are so grateful that we remain in the hybrid learning model. Students returned this week enthusiastic and ready to dive back into learning after last week's break. The entire KMS staff continues to be so impressed by our students and their engagement and tenacity during such challenging times.

On Friday, all families will receive a text and email with a short survey. This is the same survey that you received 2 weeks ago. We appreciated your feedback and comments on the ways that we can improve and also the things for us to celebrate. Please take a few minutes to respond to the survey-thanks!

This is a reminder for our 8th grade families that there is a virtual Parent University tomorrow night about high school selection process. See below for more information and a link to the meeting.

Thanks for your continued support and please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Matinicus: Four Freedoms

Matinicus students are exploring concepts around freedom and individual rights this fall, using Norman Rockwell’s famous illustrations of the Four Freedoms paintings that were printed in the Saturday Evening Post in 1943. These images: Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Worship were inspired by Franklin Roosevelt’s State of the Union speech in 1941.

As part of this project, Matinicus students had the opportunity to zoom with Jessica Lockhart, Program Director at WMPG, who introduced them to the basics of developing and producing a podcast. For the expedition's final product, students will be creating a podcast related to the Four Freedoms; these podcasts will be shared on the WMPG website, as well as on the King website. Students will also be viewing a Portland Ovation's presentation: Living Voices, Hear My Voice, a dramatization of a young white woman's experience as a suffragette during World War I.
