February 27th, 2023 - UCET GEGUtah Demo SlaM (Open to all Google Certified Educators)

Hello All,

Its that time of the year again: the UCET GEGUtah Demo Slam is upon us!

As most of you know, this is an opportunity for those of you who might not be present at UCET as well. This year is a little different. In the past, the Demo Slam was limited to Coaches/Trainers/Innovators. This year, we are opening up the Slam to ANY Google Certified Educator from L1 to Innovator. Due to the number of Google Certified Educators in Utah now, we are going to have to limit things to the first 12 trainers to fill out their details on the spreadsheet. (What an exciting problem to have!)

Here are the details:

This is a Demo Slam style presentation and we will host the demos in video form (This makes the presentation go very smoothly). The participants will get to see us present the videos and then vote on the video/tool that they think is the best!

If you are unable to physically attend the session that's still OK. We have had this situation in the past where one of our team members was unable to be there at UCET. We can still present your video on your behalf!

The rules will be as follows:

For reference, here is our presentation from 2020 and here is our presentation from 2019. Also, if you are unsure what to do for your video, please watch the most recent GEGUtah meetup and there are five great examples.

If you are interested, please respond and/or add your name to this list as soon as possible. You can fill in your topic as soon as you're ready. Here is the list again:

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you!

Matt

The lesson teaches how to create a to-do list, schedule events, and how to use videoconferencing tools. It is a great starting point for students that may need some help with distance learning. February 8th, 2023 - GET Googley: Fall in Love With Sheets / 1 year!

First off, one year ago today I decided to share out a template for a project that I was working on. Once I sent it, I thought, "It would be fun to send one of these everyday." Then I just kept working it through and sending out daily resources. Now exactly one year in, I am excited to keep working with our great GEGUtah team to send out resources and to support the amazing Utah educator community. Thank you for a great first year!

Today's Resource Share is a brand new episode of Get Googley. Sheets has never been my favorite tool, but in the last year I have consistently seen its power and authenticity as a tool. This video shows off some of my favorite features in formulas, timeline view, and some newer features to sheets that can help teachers use it in their classrooms. Check out the video below:

February 7th, 2023 - Google's Bard

Today's Resource Share is a little different. There has been a lot of discussion about AI in education over the past few months, partly due to ChatGPT. There are a lot of different AI programs out there and Google is no different. Yesterday, they announced Bard, their new AI search program. It is really fascinating, but it still being rolled out; it will be fully out in the next few months. To learn more, check out this blog post at Google's official blog:

https://blog.google/technology/ai/bard-google-ai-search-updates/

If you are new to AI and would like a primer, Matt Miller from Ditch That Textbook did a presentation last week at TCEA about AI and ChatGPT that may be of interest:

February 6th, 2023 - Keep to Docs

Today's Resource Share is a great video from Google Workspaces' Youtube Channel exploring a topic from last month's GEGUtah Meetup. In this quick video, learn how to open Google Keep from the right-side panel throughout the Google Suite, create a note or list, and then add that note or list to a Google Doc. It is a great workflow for notetaking with students, for PLCs or faculty meetings, and connecting all your work together. Check it out at the link below:

February 2nd, 2023 - Carmen Sandiego on Google Earth

Today's Resource Share is a great resource from Google Earth. Any time I hear Carmen Sandiego, I just get so excited and Google Earth capitalized on this excitement a few months ago with the launch of their series of Carmen Sandiego educational games. The series, which has three titles, is free for students to explore our Earth in search of Carmen Sandiego (all that is missing is the Rockapella soundtrack). Check out the first game at this link:

February 1st, 2023 - UCET23 Featured Speaker: Dan Ryder

Today's Resource Share is another UCET23 Featured Speaker. Dan Ryder is a teacher, design-thinker, and improvisational speaker from Maine. His presentations often rely on deep learning mixed with fun, engaging projects for students, a process he outlines in his book with Amy Burvall, Intention: Critical Creativity in the Classroom. For instance, in a recent presentation, he used lego to explore five-minute exercises with students to show what they retained from recent learning experiences. He is an accomplished speaker at conferences including ISTE, SXSWEDU, and FETC. His most recent project, a collaboration with the US State Department, is on teaching English with comic books. Check out that project in a short article on Edutopia below:

Dan will be speaking at UCET on both days on the third floor of UVCC. If you have not registered for UCET23, you can do so at this link: https://ucet.org/conference/registration/
