Snapshots C and B Levels


As an introduction to photographing people, we are going to look at the differences between snapshots and photographs.

If you cannot photograph people, you can take selfies and use other objects. Keep in mind composition and CAST.


Snaps are taken at parties, vacations, barbecues, Christmas, Eid and anywhere people gather for a good time. Sometimes your subjects are surprised. Other times you might call a person’s name and grab an embarrassing quick snap when the person turns around.


You don’t need any special lighting equipment or super fancy cameras. Snaps are grab shots and fun to take.


A snap shot is:

• noun – a photograph often taken with a hand-held camera or phone

• a grab shot taken at a party, holidays, vacation, friends getting together

• little if any advanced planning – not posed, very casual

• most people just point their camera, call someone’s name and snap a picture

• fun.


A photograph is:


• preplanned

• posed

• photographer gives directions

• somewhat controlled setting – although luck can play a role

• should also be fun.

Now that your are Grade 10 Com Tech Pros, you can move beyond snaps and start to take portraits. But first, you are going to take some snapshots of your fellow classmates for fun and marks. Your next assignment after snapshots is a series of planned portraits.


Snaps C and B Levels


1. Create a 3 column by 8 row table like the one below.

Column 1 is an internet shot

Column 2 is your 1st photo

Column 3 is your 2nd photo

2. Collect snapshots from the internet of 1 female and 1 males, plus 1 different group snaps. Past them into column 1.


3. Take a minimum 15, preferably 20 or 30 or even more like 31 or 40 snaps of your fellow classmates, a roughly equal mixture of boys and girls.


4. Include 5 or 6 group shots of people sitting on a bench, the floor or standing around together. Remember to change your camera angles.


5. Cull through all your shots and pick your best 10 snaps. shot of 4 females, 4 males and 4 groups. You should hand in 10 photos in total. No editing required.


6. Photoshop them according to the basic Photoshop Steps.


7. Paste the into your table. Then hand in through Google Classroom.

If other people in your home don't wanttheir phototaken, grab a few shot of pets, toys or stuff animals.

Time line


You have:


▸ one (1) period to collect your Internet shots and take your snaps.

▸ one (1) period to edit and hand them in.


Two (2) days in total.
