Using a high ISO means more grain or noise in your photo. Look at the photos at the other end of this link. Scroll down to study the photos. Note how the increase noise or grain cuts down on the detail of the photos. Grain mostly show up in the mid tones and not the black or white colours.

How to calculate the slowest shutter speed for hand holding your camera

Look at the focal length of your lens

Put 1 over it and that is your slowest shooting speed.

Example, your focal length is 60 mm. When you turn it into a fraction, you get 1/60. That is slowest handheld shutter speed you should use

Turning on flash -- Look on the left side of your camera, beside the pentaprism. You will see a button with a lightning bolt on it. Press it and the flash will pop up.
