Painting with Light

Painting With Light

When the sun goes down you do not need to put away your camera. In fact in situations with little or no light, you can take amazing photos. In some situations, you can bring your own light and take simply more awesomer photos. And for this assignment, you are going to bring your own light to a darkened room to create “painting with light” photos.

You may have seen photos of cars driving at night displaying streaks of light from both their headlights and taillights. See the example above.

What happens is when the shutter is open, the cars are moving and they create a streak of light. You are going to use the same principle to create your own painting with light photos.

Clink onhte link below for another example of the painter Pablo Picasso and photographer Philippe Halsman collaborating to create a painting with light portrait of Picasso.

You will need the following equipment:

• A darkened room -- the middle room works well. There are a couple of practice rooms in the music room that we can also use.

• A camera capable of time exposures, which we have.

• A tripod.

• A flashlight (you phone light is good -- if you have a coloured LED option on your phone, even better), glow sticks, coloured LEDs – you have to supply your own.

• Coloured gels to change the light colour, which we have.

• An object like a wrench, a hole punch, dice, pen, stapler, an elephant (kidding) or similar small object that you paint with light.

• Partners

So take these photos:

1 Take 4 amazing photos, where you trace different shapes in the air. Create circles, a heart, a figure 8 or spirals. Anything that comes to mind.

2 Take 2 photographs of the person tracing a pattern, then firing the camera flash on rear-curtain sync, to illuminate the subject. Like the Picasso photo above.

3 You need 2 of the following example. Have your assistant create different shapes in the air, but instead of firing the camera flash, use the flashlight on your cell phone to paint the person who created the tracings.

4 Pick an object, it could be an apple, a book, a camera, a dice, an elephant (kidding) anything you want and use your phone flashlight to illuminate the object. You need to photographs two different objects.

5 Repaint your objects and his time use a red or blue or different coloured flashlight. Here is a link to show how it is done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vEoUFAjKTM

So you should hand in:

• 4 tracing photos – see number 1

• 2 tracing photos with the light painter being illuminated by a flash – see number 2

• 2 flashlight painted photos – see number 3

• 2 photos of light painting of different objects with a cell phone light – see number 4.

• 2 photos of light painting of different objects using a coloured light or gel – see number 5.

That is 12 photos total

NOTES:

1. Set up your camera on a tripod with an f stop of 16 or 22. Set the shutter speed to 10 seconds. Use an ISO setting of 100 or 200.

2. Manually pre focus on your subject and turn off auto focus – set your focus to manual on the lens. Turn out the lights and press the shutter.

3. While the shutter is open, turn on your light source and wave it around in a pattern, such as heart or figure eight.

4. When your shutter closes, examine your picture. Then take another one with a different shutter speed, say 15 or 20 seconds.
