OVERVIEW
The Guide checks the stove and fuel bottle are in a functional state and free from damage
The Guide ensures that the fuel used is only White Spirit in the Whisperlite stove
The Guide ensures that an adequate amount of fuel or butane canisters are available for the intended purpose
The area where the stove will be used is free of flammable materials and at least 4 m away from tents and other flammable equipment
The stove is placed on a firm, stable surface; preferably a rock
The stove is setup and operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions; attached in Appendix FS of this document
No participant briefing is required; the Guide articulates that only staff are permitted to use the fuel stove
The fuel stoves are operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Participants are not permitted to operate the fuel stove
The Guide monitors the stove to ensure safe operation
Additional diligence is exercised when children are present
The fuel stove is returned clean and in a functional state
Food residue is completely removed before return to storage
Fuel bottles are de-pressurised prior to transporting (in backpack and/or vehicle)
Fuel bottles are stored empty with caps removed - remnant fuel is emptied back into the bulk fuel storage
Used butane canisters are marked as USED; empty canisters are disposed of appropriately.
NOTE: Fuel stoves are only used during overnight journeys or during selected canyoning activities. This SOP does not apply to cooking equipment at Base Camp.
