Situations where an immediate need for urgent assistance is required where a life threatening (or immediately potential for a threat to life) exists
Situations where no other communications options exist and to prevent a situation requiring non-urgent assistance escalating to a life threatening situation
The PLB is used after due consideration of other appropriate communications options
< During MAG activities where mobile communication is poor or unavailable, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is carried by the Guide >
Guide: a qualified and trained person in the field whose roll is to supervise participants
PREPARE
Two-way communications via a mobile/satellite phone or radio is the most effective means of communication when in a distress situation, with some of the reasons outlined below:
Instant confirmation that the call has been received by emergency services;
Ability to communicate position, nature of distress, required assistance;
Emergency services can adequately scale response assets according to required assistance;
Ability to provide updates on the situation and also receive advice until emergency services arrive.
If two-way communications is not available, then a distress beacon should be activated in situations of grave and imminent danger. This equates to when you feel you are facing a life threatening situation. This is a personal decision that is different for everybody.
Cease adventure activities and direct all resources in rescue and group safety
Participants are notified of potential modifications and alterations and any additional risk or hazards that may be encountered
Participants are advised of additional expectations required during the situation
Communications equipment and network coverage is considered
IMMEDIATE ACTIONS
Activate the PLB according to the operating instructions
After activating your beacon, position it in a clear and open area. The aerial must be vertical pointing towards the sky, preferably with 180 degrees or more of visibility, away from trees, buildings, mountains, and vehicles. If possible, position it at the highest point if you are within a deep ravine or gully. This will ensure maximum effectiveness for detection
The PLB is setup and secured in a clear area, ideally above head height
The guide manages the immediate needs of the situation including the provide first aid, perform rescue actions and/or evacuate to a safe location
If second guide present and able to relocate to area where there is communications - follow procedures outlined on Urgent Emergency
Accidental activation: If your beacon is accidentally activated, switch it off immediately and contact the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) on 1800 641 792. There is no penalty for accidental activation.
EVACUATE/ RECOVER

The guide coordinates with the MAG Operations Manager to provide evacuation and/or rescue
