Dear Summerside Families,
It was another exciting week at Summerside as we kicked off the week with a whole school assembly. When we come together as a whole school, preschool - fifth grade, we celebrate how we take care of ourselves, others, and Summerside and practice the skills needed to be a part of a larger learning community. See below for more insight about our PTO's Summerstride Walk-a-Thon fundraiser that also brought positive energy to our assembly!
Every day at Summerside is filled with learning opportunities to ask your child about. In preschool, students ate snacks that connected to a favorite story, Pete the Cat! You can ask them about what "water" they ate with their fruit in Miss Rachel's room. Fourth graders are digging into fractions together, working on equivalent fractions and fractions greater than one. You can ask your fifth graders about what they read about consumers and producers in language arts with Mrs. Johnson.
Each week, be sure to scroll through all four sections of our newsletter as we try to provide quick, updated insight into your child's day, what is happening at Summerside, in the West Clermont School District and opportunities in our Community as part of our commitment to excellence for every child, every day, in every way.
Extended Community Opportunities
The district section of our newsletter is filled with key information to connect with this week, including asking for your insight into our School Facilities Survey, Understanding School Finances, School Update, Mental Health Supports, and Holiday Support opportunities.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Courtney & Mrs. Edwards
West Clermont is excited to announce our partnership with FC Cincinnati and the Stay In The Game! Network to increase awareness of the critical importance of school attendance to student learning and development. Through this partnership, the district aims to bring continual focus on students attending school, and to build enthusiasm through engaging activities and incentives for reaching goals.
To launch our work in this area, please join us in celebrating September as Attendance Awareness Month!
Over the coming month, you will begin to see evidence of our FC Cincinnati and Stay In The Game! partnership throughout the schools as we work together to share with our students the importance of being at school. Additionally, we invite all parents and guardians to speak with your students about the importance of regular school attendance, and to take the pledge demonstrating a commitment to this goal. Students can then complete a pledge certificate to bring back to school to share their pride! Finally, later in the month, be on the lookout for other communications celebrating our collective effort to support our students’ success.
More information regarding the Stay In The Game! Network can be found at https://stayinthegame.org/
Students in grades preK - 12 grade in West Clermont are engaging in the Leader in Me learning together!
Dear Summerside Families,
On 9/19/24-9/24/24 our students will participate in child abuse workshops facilitated by trained staff from the Council on Child Abuse of Southern Ohio (COCA). COCA provides workshops to over 20,000 children per year in various school districts and settings including Cincinnati Public Schools, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Northwest School District, Norwood City Schools, Forest Hills Schools, Oak Hills Schools, charter schools, and many others.
Ohio’s 134th General Assembly enacted Senate Bill 288 which updated the prescribed curriculum for health education, adding requirements related to child sexual abuse prevention, dating violence prevention and sexual violence prevention. The law includes requirements for student instruction, parent and legal guardian notification and training for school personnel. Additional information regarding this law can be found here.
COCA staff specialize in delivering age-appropriate presentations on the topics of preventing child abuse, bullying, and dating violence. Each presentation is modified to best suit your child’s grade and level of understanding and includes relevant activities and videos to help facilitate interactive learning and discussion.
Younger students (grades K-2) will learn the difference between safe and unsafe touches. Older students (grades 3-8) will learn to recognize the types of child abuse (Physical, Verbal, Sexual, Emotional, and Neglect). All students will learn the importance of telling a trusted adult if child abuse is suspected.
All students will be able to speak with one of our trained staff following the classroom presentation. This is a time for them to ask questions or express concerns in a one-on-one conversation. This portion of the program is optional.
Please take the time to talk to your child about the program and discuss any questions or comments s/he might have about the subject. Add your personal thoughts and rules, too.
If you have questions or concerns about the content of COCA’s presentations, please visit the FAQ page of their website at www.cocachild.org.
All students will participate in this program unless they have a written note indicating that you do NOT give permission. To opt out, please complete this form, or contact the school for assistance Mrs. Karen Fields, fields_k@my.westcler.org.
Sincerely,
Lisa Courtney

We had a fantastic kick-off this week for the Summerstride fundraiser! The students are eager to raise money for much-needed items like playground equipment, drinking fountains, and, of course, for some fun prizes!
They're off to an amazing start! Just a quick reminder that donations can be collected online by setting up your child’s account, or you can send in cash/check donations weekly. Please remember to send in the white collection envelopes each Monday as we will be counting and updating the totals regularly. Envelopes will be returned weekly for continued use.
If you have any questions about Summerstride, feel free to email the PTO at summersidepto@gmail.com
Thank you support!

Our Core Values: Together We are, ON THE RISE. R-Relationship, I-Innovation, S-Student Centered, E-Empowerment
We are creating a courageous culture by focusing on our mission of committing to excellence with every learner, every day, every way. We strive to have a safe, caring, positive learning environment where all students have a sense of belonging.
Dear Parents and Community Members,
I hope this message finds you well. We are off to a great start of the school year so far! As we continue our journey toward enhancing our school district, I am reaching out to emphasize the importance of your participation in our newly launched School Facilities Survey. I urge you to take a few moments to complete the survey HERE or scan the QR code.
Over the past several years, we have made it a priority to listen to your feedback and incorporate your insights into our decision-making processes. The establishment of the Community Advisory Team was a significant step in ensuring that our planning reflects the wants and needs of our community. This group has worked diligently to provide recommendations that will guide our future, and we continue to incorporate your voice into our future planning.
This latest survey is a critical opportunity for you to convey your thoughts regarding our school facilities, especially as we approach a pivotal time for our district. Key decisions are on the horizon, and it is vital that these decisions reflect what you envision for our schools. Your feedback will help us understand the challenges we face and prioritize improvements that matter most to you and your children.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement in this important process. Your participation truly makes a difference!
Warm regards,
Natasha Adams

Master Facilities Recommendations
Dear West Clermont families and staff,
The West Clermont Board of Education unanimously approved the next steps with the Master Facilities Plan on Monday night. The resolution accepts the community advisory team’s recommendations and tasks the administration to further study, review, and analyze the following proposal:
● Removing 5th grade from elementary schools and merging it with 6th grade to form a new intermediate school.
● Building this intermediate school next to a new 7th and 8th grade building on the current campus. While these buildings will be connected for efficiency, they will function as separate schools.
● Constructing two new elementary schools one for Holly Hill and one for Merwin plus implementing a plan for preschool.
I’m thankful to the Community Advisory Team who put in months of work to address aging facilities, overcrowded schools, and inequitable facilities across the district. The district leadership team will continue analyzing, studying, and refining the recommendations to determine the educational, operational, and financial impact to our district and the best path forward. The board’s vote is the first step in a lengthy process. I will be presenting more findings and discussing next steps at the October 15, 2024, board of education meeting.
In the meantime here are helpful links to learn more about the proposal, facilities, and resolution:

The district is also hosting a series of upcoming Town Halls and building tours that I would encourage you to attend. This is your chance to tour schools, ask questions, and engage with district leaders.
Please RSVP if you wish to attend.
Thank you,
Natasha Adams, Superintendent
Understanding School Finances
Over the last few weeks, we have been rolling out our Understanding School Finance series. In the first videos, we provided a broad overview of how the West Clermont School District is funded. It's important to understand the sources of revenue that provide resources to our district every day and where your tax dollars go. This week we released Part 3 and Part 4 of our video series.
Part 3 walks through the intricacies of the State of Ohio's involvement in school funding. The State of Ohio provides funding to every public school in Ohio, but there is a specific process to determine how much each district receives. In the last fiscal year, the State of Ohio accounted for 31.4% of West Clermont's General Operating Fund. You can watch part 3 HERE.
Part 4 provides a broad overview of what West Clermont School District's budget looks like, and how that breaks down to per pupil spending. West Clermont spends around $12,000 per pupil per school year. Our treasurer, Dan Romano, spends time in the video breaking down that per pupil spending so you can see exactly where each dollar is allocated to help students along their educational journey. You can watch part 4 HERE.
As a note, additional detailed information about the topics discussed in this video are available on our finance website.
We also re-released two new facilities videos this week; Clough Pike Elementary and Holly Hill Elementary. Clough Pike Elementary School was constructed in 1968 and stands as one of the older buildings in our district. Watch the video below to learn more.

Holly Hill Elementary has been in operation since 1982 and has a capacity of 425 students. We encourage you to get to know Holly Hill by clicking below and watching our latest video!

As we round out the first month of back to school we want to take a minute to remind all parents, students, and staff about our safety and threat protocols.
The West Clermont School District takes the safety of our students and staff very seriously. It is essential that we all play a role in ensuring our schools remain safe and positive places for learning. So if you see something, say something!

The district is renewing and expanding partnerships with mental health agencies to ensure that any student with need has access to comprehensive services starting as early as preschool and continuing through 12th grade without any additional cost to the district. Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, these new partners will provide the following services to any student in need, with parent / guardian permission.
● As you are aware, Child Focus has been a valued partner of the district in this important work for many years. below.
● Necco will serve students preschool through 8th grade. Every elementary school will be staffed with at least one full-time, licensed therapist and two case managers. West Clermont Middle School will have 2 therapists and four case managers.
● Best Point will serve students at West Clermont High School, including two therapists and a care coordinator.
● Therapists will provide assessment, individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention. They additionally will assist in completing assessments / referrals for students needing medication management and/or wraparound services.
