If you build a perfect sandcastle, a dragon will move in. And that’s exactly what happens to one very lucky boy at the beach. Dad is busy sunbathing and Mum is busy with her book, so the boy and dragon roam the beach together, flying a kite, braving the waves, and roasting marshmallows. But no one believes him when he shares the news of his magnificent dragon. Is there truly a mischievous dragon running around on the beach or is someone’s imagination running wild?
Before listening to the story, think about the last time you went to the beach. What did you do there? What did you see?
Now make a prediction. What do you think will happen in this story? When making your prediction think about the title 'When a Dragon Moves In'.
While listening to the story
Make predictions – What will happen next?
Think about what could be real and what might not be real. Give a thumbs up for something that can really happen (reality) and a thumbs down for things that are not real (fantasy).
After listening, think about what happened. Can you retell the story to your toys? Could you tell the story to a family member?
Honesty is about telling the truth, treating people fairly and not blaming others. Acting in a way that hides the truth is also not being honest. Even though adults might be sad or disappointed by something that happened, it is more important we always be truthful. Adults will be proud of a child who tells the truth when it is difficult and will always do their best to help them.
Think about how the main character in 'When a Dragon Moves In' might not have been truthful. Is the boy telling the truth? Why do you think that he is blaming the dragon for the things that happen?
Write about a time you were afraid to tell the truth.
OR
Write about a time you got blamed for something that you didn’t do. How did that make you feel?
