“Action is the foundational key to all success. ”
Pablo Picasso
Class overview
Normally, students would have electives for an hour each day, four days a week. This year, with the demands of remote education, Mountain Mahogany decided to make all electives asynchronous and not require live Zooms for these subjects. K -2 grade students will find the electives offerings in their teacher’s weekly learning plans. 3 – 8 grade students will find the elective offerings in their Google Classrooms.
Electives for students in grades K – 5 are not graded. This means that if students aren’t able to participate in electives, they won’t be penalized. Physical activity and the arts can be great ways of building resilience and dealing with stress for children (and adults). We hope families will find the elective offerings rich and meaningful experiences, but we don’t want to add yet another assignment to the “to-do” list. This means engage – or don’t – based on what works for your family.
Electives for students in grades 6 – 8 will be graded on a pass / fail basis. Grades will be based on students’ best work, not on completing 100% of the weekly assignments. Students should not worry about failing, unless they have never participated in the elective at all. Even if this is the case, it’s not too late. All of the assignments are posted in Google Classroom. Students should pick one and submit it before the end of the semester.
About me
My name is Amarilis Vargas Matteo but I go by Ms. Elise. I have nearly two decades of experience in arts education teaching art classes to children of all ages in a variety of settings including public and private schools, community centers, museums, and arts organizations. This includes several public murals (ceramic tile and painted) created in collaboration with my students. I completed my MA in Art Education with distinction at the University of New Mexico with an emphasis in Art and Ecology and a BFA in painting at New Mexico State University. My husband and I spent several years living in New Jersey where I was both an instructor and the Arts Education Director for the Arts Council of Princeton. We returned to my native state of New Mexico to raise our two daughters and be closer to family. When I am not making art, I enjoy time with my family and doing yoga. As a teacher, my philosophy emphasizes that art making is fundamentally a process of ongoing discovery. I frequently use nature, art history and world culture as a way to inspire students to look more closely at their everyday environment and more deeply into the natural world and our connection to it.
