Artist use the elements of Art to express visual language. The elements of art include, Line, Shape, Color, Form, Value, Texture, and Space.
Last week we used the elements of line, shape and color to create a Self Portrait. This week we will continue using line, shape and color to create an abstract painting based on the art work of Kandinsky who's abstract artwork was inspired by music. Abstract art is a nonrepresentational piece of art that uses line, shape and color to convey an idea. So turn on your listening ears because this week we are going to practice active listening to create abstract paintings. Grab your art bag and lets get started!
Supplies Needed: Sharpie , watercolor paper, watercolors, cup of water half full, music by Mozart click on yellow button, Headphones (optional)
Find a quiet space to work and set up your supplies.
Watch the youtube video before getting started
Close your eyes and listen closely to the Mozart music link I have provided. What kinds of lines shapes and colors do you see when you listening? Can you separate the instruments in the music does each instrument have a different line, color or shape? Are the lines angry zigzag lines or calmer wavy lines. Are the colors bright or subdued? Pay close attention to what your hearing.
Grab your sharpie and watercolor paper and listen again to the music. This time using your sharpie begin drawing the lines and shapes you hear. Try not to use words or recognizable images focus on making different lines and shapes based on what your hearing. Are the sounds large or small, thick or thin. You can create repetition, pattern and movement.
Take out your watercolors and a small cup of water and begin painting. Again listen actively and use colors that reflect what you are hearing.
Let your painting dry, photogragh it and post into Artsonia before adding your finished artwork into your portfolio.
