This week we will be fast forwarding to the early ninities and look at Afrofurturism. Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic dating roughly from the 1970's but it was first coined Afrofuturism in the early ninies. Afrofuturism combines science-fiction, history and fantasy to explore the African American experiance and aims to connect those from the black diaspora with their forgotten ancestry. Diaspora is used to discribe movements in population from one country to another. African diaspora is the worldwide collection of communities descended from native Africans or people from Africa, mostly in the Americas. Thus, it’s no coincidence that work labeled “Afrofuturist” includes themes of utopianism and liberation in their images of the future. It transcends categories, from literature to music to film and visual arts.
