When a student is absent, they need to check the "Biology Agenda" on Schoology to see what they missed and make up the work. The next step is to contact me by Remind text or email before 6 p.m. the day prior to their next scheduled class, if they were unable to complete the work from the missed class. This assures that the student has an opportunity to learn the missing material and doesn't fall behind. Extensions may be granted if I am contacted prior to 6 p.m. the day before a due date.
I am available for make-up work, answering questions, and extra help. Students use the appointment request form near the top of Schoology to choose a suitable time and then I will write a pass to meet with them.
Biology is an SOL course, meaning students will take an end of course test in May which counts toward graduation. Students need one verified credit in science, in addition to the requirements in other subjects. "Verified credit" means that the student passes the course AND the associated SOL test. Initial understanding, retention of concepts, and critical thinking are key to passing the biology test.
Loudoun County Public Schools works with Varsity Tutors to offer free tutoring to students. If your child has failed an SOL test in middle school or high school, I highly recommend checking out this free service. Additionally, if your child would like to earn a higher grade than they presently have, have them check it out! Varsity Tutors advertises 200 subjects they can help with.
Major summative assessments will be announced at least one block prior to the test. Students should not wait until it is announced to begin studying. We have daily questions (a small quiz) almost every day, so the best way to study is frequently and for short amounts of time. Almost all students have a study hall every other school day and all students have VikingTime daily to organize, complete work, and study.
