Viruses

Skill 3: Classify viruses as nonliving by explaining which characteristics of life they possess and which ones they do not.

The little 'space ships' are viruses. They have landed on a host cell and will take over and force the cell to make more copies of the virus.

Do this!

1. List the 8 characteristics of life from memory before you start this activity. You may do this on a Google Doc or on paper (then take a picture and save to Classroom.)

3. Research each of the 8 characteristics of life to determine whether or not viruses possess that characteristic. Write 'yes' beside characteristics viruses have and 'no' beside ones they do not.

4. For each characteristic that viruses possess, justify why you wrote 'yes.'

When you are ready to check your answers, let me know. Your goal is to understand why you should put each characteristic into the proper category and be able to explain it. Please do not erase your original work; just make corrections. Ask questions if you do not understand.
