Observations are usually the first step in scientific investigation. A person makes an observation, or notices something interesting which raises a question. The goal of an experiment is to collect data to answer the question.

The question can be turned into an hypothesis, or prediction.

Once the data (information) is collected, a conclusion can be drawn. The conclusion is made using inferences about the data collected. The conclusion often leads to more questions to be tested. These related experiments are called extensions.
