RESOURCES

•Grammar videos

•Writing a thesis statement

Parts of a (complex) Sentence

  • Subject (Simple and Compound)
  • Predicate (Simple and Compound
  • Object (Indirect and Direct)
    • Direct objects answer the questions "whom" or "what?" The D.O. receives the action of the verb.
    • Indirect objects answer the question "for whom" or "to whom" the action of the verb is carried out. It is placed before the D.O. in a sentence.

The 8 Parts of Speech

Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Conjunction, Preposition, Interjection

Parts of a Sentence

Simple Sentence: Subject and Predicate

The introductory paragraph: hook (sentence #1; background information (sentences #2 and #3, and possibly #4); thesis statement (claim) sentences #4 OR #5. (Keep your claim to one sentence. You could make it a complex one by using the correct punctuations.)

The hook grabs your reader's attention.

Examples:

Share a surprising statistic and/or interesting facts.Give a quote that relates to your topic.Ask a question.Provide an uncommon (unique) observation or point of view.Captivate with a personal story.Give a definition of a term significant to your topic.

The background information.

The information that you think your reader needs to know in order to understand the topic. Read your introduction to someone to see if they understand the topic of your paper. You know that you may need to give a little more background, if they ask questions like, “what is (the topic)?” or “What do you mean by...?” “Are you talking about X or Y?”

Examples:

Add a definition; clarify the subject (eg., Leo Frank from the 1913 case and not Anne Frank's great uncle).Explain an opening quotation.

Coming next: the body paragraphs and the conclusion.

Your thesis statement (claim) is your GPS of your paper. It answers the question/prompt and sets the direction for your paper.

For my football lovers, your thesis statement (claim) is the quarterback who calls the plays on the field. If the running back (the body) doesn't follow the play, he's out of the game! If you have something in the body of the paper that is not in your claim, you need to remove it OR amend your play (thesis statement).

Body Paragraphs and Conclusion

body paragraphs include: * a topic sentence (main point of the paragraph)* evidence* explanation of evidence and how it connects to the main point.* transition to the next pointConclusion* a thoughtful ending could include recommendations for future actions or changes.
