Assignments are listed by the Deadline or Due Date!

Art 2 Assignments:

5.19.19: Photo #14 is Due: The 15 Foot Circle: Stand in the center of the room or wherever you happen to be. Take photographs of only subjects that happen to be within 15 feet of where you are. Give yourself a time limit. Exhaust all possibilities. Get as many images as you can. The idea is to look at the objects within this space in a different way.

5.22.19: Prints Due!

5.23.19 Final Critique (have linocut print complete to turn in for grading; for the critique you can submit your print or sculpture)

All artwork images will be given before the end of the year so you can post them to your site.

Past Assignments Below:

Photo #1: Narrative: Your photo must tell a story or begin to tell a story. The viewer should want to ask questions- the more questions, the better. It can be genre (everyday life), it can elicit mystery/confusion, or it can make a statement. The photo can be in black and white or color.

Photo #2: Out of Place: Take a photo of something that is out of place – preferably something that you find yourself outside rather than something that you compose. Consider your light source- need to take pictures in natural light and not indoors.

Photo #3: Starts with N: Take a photo of an object, place, or setting that starts with the letter, N. Have fun with it. Try to find something that no one else would think to photograph. It can be found or staged. Look at the object or place from different points of view.

Photo #4: Pattern or Texture: Focus on a subject with a pattern or texture. If you’re focusing on texture, the viewer should be able to give you several adjectives to describe the texture. If it’s a pattern, allow the pattern to lead our eye somewhere in the picture plane.

Photo #5: Water Focus on showing patterns, texture, or volume of water. It can be as simple as a glass of water on the counter to natural bodies of water. Think about the viewpoint you are showing with your camera.

Photo #6: Candid: Catch someone off-guard or take a candid photo (not staged) of a person(s). It has to be interesting enough to hold our attention for more than 30 seconds. What setting are they in, and how do other people/objects play into the picture plane?

Photo #7: Rooms: Choose a room within your house. Make sure you have a good light source (preferably not artificial). Photograph one slant of the room or an area/object in the room that tells us about you or the place. *I should be able to tell it's a room.

Photo #8: Hands: Take a picture of your hands or someone else’s. It can be more than one set of hands. What are the hands doing in the picture? What do the details on the person’s hand say about them?

Photo #9: Color: Look at your surroundings and try to find a subject(s) that has all 3 primary colors, 1 complementary color pair, or a tertiary color.

Photo #10: Emotion: Convey an emotion without using a face. This is a purely conceptual assignment, but it is important to be able to relay emotion in your photographs and you might not always have a person available to do that with. Challenge yourself to think deeper about this one.

Photo #11: White on White: Research “white on white” photographs. The idea is that you take a photo of a white object against a white background, so that the value, shape/form, texture, line of the object(s) is emphasized. To set this up, place a white object on a white sheet of paper. Make sure you have a good light source!

Photo #12: School: Take a portrait of WLPCS. The goal is to have a different photo than others in your class. If you had to capture life at Latin, what would you photograph? If the image is good, it may be published in the yearbook.

Photo #13: Shape: Let’s go back to the basics. Choose a shape. Squares are easy, but you can also use circles, triangles, etc. Search out this shape and find the most interesting composition with this shape.

AJ #1: Draw a silver spoon using graphite. Have fun with your composition, and create varying values with the graphite.

AJ #2: Choose 3 different types of papers (newspaper, tracing paper, solid color, wrapping paper, etc.) Cut or tear the paper into shapes. Glue to the page. Leave some open white space. Using charcoal, graphite, or pen draw an object of your choice overlapping the different papers. Draw the object from observation.

AJ #3: Fill in the blank with an noun or verb. I am (the) _______ of this world. Media is your choice.

AJ #4: Crumple a piece of paper and draw it, with all of its shadows and light areas.

AJ #5: Illustrate a dream you have had using 5 symbols. Think about your composition. Color is optional.

AJ #6 Due: Draw a shoe of your choice. Look at it from observation. Use graphite, pen, or colored pencil. Add lots of details. Consider the viewpoint of the shoe, what kind of shoe and what it says about you, and how the shoe is drawn on the page.
