Using Sessions

Using Sessions

Sessions are like digital classroom periods...

Starting a session means that you are wanting to actively monitor a class (or multiple classes). You can set the length of time you want a session to be open (typically a class period) and you can use the session screen to monitor student access as they interact with their computer. It also allows for various degrees of control ranging from monitoring, chatting, locking, opening specific tabs, and active presentations through Pear Deck.

Tabs within Sessions

There are several "views" that you can open up in a Session...

These are found in the tabs below the session name, across all tabs you can activate chat, which allows for one-on-one chats with students, and off-task alerts, which highlights students who are not on task. Each tab has their own interactions, they are:

Screens - This tab is the default view, here you'll see a grid of student screens that you can monitor and interact with. Clicking a student screen will expand the view to show what that student is doing and allow for a few more interactions: excluding, opening tabs, locking, screenshot, annotate, active tabs, and chat.

Timelines - This tab shows your students listed on a moving timeline displaying ribbons that show how long students have been viewing specific tabs. Clicking a ribbon will show what that tab actually is. From here you can also open tabs, lock devices, exclude students from the session, apply a new scene, or present your screen.

Screenshots - This tab shows screenshots that you've taken of specific student screens throughout the period using the "Screens" tab.

Call Students - This is more useful for students working from home and distance learning models. But this allows you to interact with students one-on-one via voice, video, or one-way screen presentation.

Pear Deck - This allows you to open Pear Deck directly in GoGuardian and you can start and share Pear Decks once you link your account.

Check-Ins - This allows you to check in with your students using a quick emoji-based screen. By default, they get two minutes to respond or you can manually end the check-in more quickly. You can send messages to students directly through this screen to follow up on their responses.

Direct Interactions with Students

You can directly interact with students in a few ways

Clicking a student screen on the "Screens" tab allows you to see what they are currently looking at. On the left, you'll see their screen and on the right, you'll see a list of all the currently opened tabs on their device. You can close any tabs by selecting the "close" button next to the tab. You can also open the tab by clicking the link listed below it. There are also interactions listed under the screen view side of the monitoring window.

Exclude Student

This essentially removes the student from the active session. This is useful for removing absent students, students on alternate tasks, or TAs who are also in your class session.

Open New Tab...

This option allows you to open a tab for that student. Click the button then type in or copy/paste a link into the bar that appears. Then, click the "Open Tab" button. This is useful for directing a student to a resource or redirecting them back on task.

Lock Device

This option locks the student's screen down. This often causes them to look up at you for direction. It can be done one student at a time or a selection of students on the main screen. This can be useful to redirect them to you when giving directions or looking for interactions.

Screenshot

This takes a screenshot of a students screen while they work. This can be useful to collect student samples or collect evidence of a student on or off task. Screenshots will collect on the "Screenshots" tab on that session's page and will be available to view in your session history.

AnnotateĀ

This allows you to interact directly on a students screen via colored circles. This is helpful for directing students to specific buttons and sections on their screen. You will not be able to type or write on their screen. It's simply used for pointing out places on a student's screen.
