Canvas User Account and Settings

The user “Account” is the first link on the Canvas navigation menu, located on the left side of every page in Canvas. Today we will be exploring “Notifications” and “Settings” from the page menu. This menu has embedded links for setting up a variety of user features, such as:

  • Notification preferences (choose which is best for you)

  • Files (displays files that have been uploaded into Canvas)

  • Settings (add ways to contact and registered services)

  • ePortfolios

  • QR for Mobile Login

Account Settings
Some of your personal information in Canvas has been restricted by the KHSD. Information that can be customized to fit your needs are the profile picture, contacts, and registered services. For a more detailed explanation about customizing your personal information read the subheading below. The image below illustrates the areas of the page you can go to edit 1) profile picture, 2-3) contacts, and 4) registered services.

1. Profile Picture
Add a picture by hovering the cursor over the circle. An image of a pencil will appear. Click the pencil to edit the picture. You can add a picture, take one, or use a gravatar. Then, click “Save.”

2. Ways to Contact
These are email addresses. The preferred email address has a and it should be your KHSD email account. You may add another one by clicking on the (Add) + Email Address link. You are only required to have the KHSD email account added, but you can add another if you like. To save any changes, click “Register Email.”

3. Other Contacts
These are cellular phone numbers and it is not required. You may add a number by clicking on the (Add) + Contact Method link. To save any changes, click “Register SMS.”

4. Web Services
For improved functionality of third-party integrations, you want to enable certain web services to allow students to maximize the use of the service with Canvas. To enable Google Drive as a Web Service, click on the “Google Drive” link under Other Services, “Authorize Access,” choose your KHSD email account, and click “Allow.” We suggest enabling Google Drive as a Registered because it allows teachers and students to retrieve and create assignments using Google Drive much simpler. NOTE: Anything created using Google Drive, will have to be shared by the creator of the material for others to view/grade it. Canvas is very different from Google Classroom in this respect.

Settings Notifications

Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences that you can receive for your courses. You can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. Your student’s notification preferences will not sync up to yours, if you want them to change their settings they will have to do that individually. Notifications can be set up for you as one of four types:

  • Notify me right away

  • Send daily summary

  • Send weekly summary

  • Do not send me anything

Each set notification will automatically apply to all of your courses. To change a notification, locate the row of the topic you wish to change from the default setting, and click on the preferred icon to set the new notification. Your action will automatically save and be applied.

Underneath each notification setting is a list of different items, related to the heading, that are available for you to set a notification for. If you aren’t sure what the item is by name alone, you can hover your cursor over the name and a box will appear with a brief description of the item.

Additional Canvas Resources

All of these resources have been linked to the Canvas Teacher guides (click Help from course navigation). Many of these resources will go deeper into using the features in Canvas and may have a video tutorial for you to view to learn more. If a link is no longer active that you have clicked on, please login to Canvas and conduct your own search of the guides. YouTube is also another great place for more information about Canvas.
