Scene Creation
Scene Creation
Scenes are used to curate what your students have access to...
The video from GoGuardian here explains what Scenes are and how to set them up. It is important to know what the difference is between the two lists that you can make for scenes - Allowed Websites and Blocked Websites.
Allowed Website Lists
Setting up an Allowed Websites List prevents students from accessing any sites except for the ones you want them to access from this list. This is sometimes called "Whitelisting."
Reasons for using an "Allowed Website List"
Students are taking a quiz and need access only to the quiz app
Lockdown Browser can be used in Canvas to achieve this as well.
Students need access to only a handful of sites for completing an assignment.
Blocked Website Lists
Setting up a Blocked Website List prevents students from accessing specific sites that you list, otherwise they have full access to the internet. This is sometimes called "Blacklisting."
Reasons for using a "Blocked Website List"
Students are distracted by a particular site - like YouTube, game sites, etc.
You want students to avoid using a particular web-based app, like AI or Grammarly
Step-by-Step
To Set Up Lists for Scenes
Navigate to "Scenes" on the navigation bar.
Choose which type of list you'd like to make, and then select "Create List"
Give the scene a name, an optional brief description, and a color.
Start adding websites using the "search" bar or "Quick Lists"
Use a * as a variable for sites that might have several extensions. For example, if you list kernhigh.instructure.com you are indicating only the homepage of Canvas, but if you list kernhigh.instructure.com/* then you allow/block EVERYTHING in Canvas. Another example would be using *.google.com to allow/block all of Google Workspace apps.
Use the "Advanced Filter" to add exceptions for your website lists.
For "Allowed Websites" lists, exceptions are websites they CANNOT access. For example, you would do this if you want them to access YouTube, but NOT a specific video.
For "Blocked Websites" lists, exceptions are websites they CAN access. For example, you would do this if you do not want them to access YouTube, EXCEPT for a specific video.
Save your List by selecting the "Save" button at the top of the screen.
