Locking Modules until a Specified Date
Modules can be locked from Student Access (but still visible) by following these simple steps...

STEP 1: Navigate to the module you wish to lock.
STEP 2: Select the "three dots" settings button.
STEP 3: Select "Edit"
STEP 4: Check "Lock Until"
STEP 5: Type in the date or use the calendar button to set a date.
STEP 6: Select "Update Module"

You'll know this is done correctly when you see the text "Will Unlock..." below the module on the right hand side.

This is a handy feature to control how quickly students progress through your course and can assist in staying organized as you use Canvas.

Prerequisites for Modules
It is also possible to set prerequisites for unlocking modules so that students must meet requirements before being able to progress throughout your coursework. This is a powerful feature that allows you to set student-paced modules like an automated course or application. This will allow some students to get ahead, but, with clever planning, you can create differentiated instruction digitally.

In order for this to work properly, you will also need to create modules with requirements for completion. Otherwise, students will gain access to the module (not having a way to meet prerequisites).
