Thermal printers print by applying heat to thermal paper. The advantages of thermal printers include:
They print quieter than dot-matrix/impact printers. This is important to not ruin the ambiance of a restaurant whenever a receipt needs to be printed.
They print faster than dot-matrix/impact printers. For businesses that process lots of orders very quickly, a printer that can match the speed of transactions is necessary.
Because of these advantages we generally recommend and use thermal printers as receipt printers for our POS system. They can also be used as printers for bar tickets or other scenarios where a quieter ambiance is necessary.
Below is a list of thermal printers that we use or have used in the past. While extensive, this list is not exhaustive and you may encounter other printer models during calls.

Dot-Matrix printers print by smacking an ink strip against paper, hence why they are also known as impact printers. The advantages of dot-matrix/impact printers include:
They are resilient to heat. This is important for kitchens where heat can be abundant.
They are quite loud when printing. While this is a disadvantage in customer-facing situations, this can be an advantage in a kitchen as cooks are able to discern from a sound cue when an order arrives in the kitchen.
Because of these advantages, we generally recommend and use dot-matrix printers as KITCHEN printers for our POS system.
