USING INFOGRAPHICS TO COMPARE HEALTH TRENDS IN THE U.S. AND SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES

STEP 1

Use the vocabulary associated with your topic to identify a selection of Spanish search terms.  Use formal/proper terminology whenever possible.

Ex: plastic surgery = cirugía plástica

cosmetic surgery = cirugía cosmética

STEP 2

Pair one of your terms together with the word infografía AND the country for your topic to search in Google.  You can also identify the web country code for your country and use that instead of the country name.

Ex: cirugía plástica infografía Colombia

cirugía cosmética infografía site:.co

This infographic was found embedded in a 2015 article from a Colombian newspaper, La República.  The bottom right-hand corner indicates that it was created by the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica (SCCP), which is a scientific organization with the greatest number of plastic surgeons in Colombia.

STEP 5

Make sure both of your infographics have similar data for an "apples to apples" comparison.  Check the facts/statistics for common content, and note the dates of each one to maintain a reasonable timeframe for comparability.--within five years should be your target.

Ex: a  list of four of "los procedimientos que más consultan los hombres" cited in an article from 2015 can be compared to the "5 most  popular cosmetic surgeries procedures in 2017"

STEP 6

Record the URLs of the page(s) where you found your infographics so that you can revisit as needed and cite your sources.  If an infographic was embedded in an article but you found its original source somewhere else, record both.

STEP 3

Click "Images" to look for infographics aligning to your topic.   When you find one, check to see if it has a citation on it that you can verify for credibility; if not, go to the page where it is housed to see if you can identify its origins.

*If you cannot confirm [the credibility of] an infographic's source ("fuente"), then it is best to find a different one.*

STEP 4

Use the same search terms, plus any additional ones gleaned from your first infographic, to conduct a new Google search in English, swapping the country for United States.  Find an infographic that has some comparable content to your first one.

Ex: plastic surgery men infographic United States

This infographic was found embedded in a 2017 article from MarketWatch, a DowJones pubication.  The bottom right-hand corner indicates that it was created by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)
