Anatomy of MLA Citations and Works Cited Pages

Note That:

  • The databases provide citations for you, otherwise you have to make your own using the above formula

  • An 'author' of a source may be multiple people (only the first is formatted as last name, first name), or even a group or organization

  • Some parts of a citation may be missing (be wary of this, as it might be a credibility red flag!), in which case omit them entirely

  • A source might have an outside/overarching sponsor--include it in normal text between the Source Title and Date

SAMPLE Works Cited Teen Health

REMEMBER:

  • One Inch Margins

  • 12 point - Times New Roman

  • Double Spaced

  • Hanging Indents

  • Works Cited - Centered at top of page

  • Citations in Alphabetical Order

  • Ignore articles (A, An, The, etc.) when alphabetizing

  • Numerical characters precede letters in alphabetization

  • Article titles must be in quotes

  • Source titles must be in italics

  • Dates must be formatted as Day Month Year (omit any parts not available)
