A school year is punctuated by high-profile landmarks that let you know where you're at. Terry Fox, Volleyball bake sales, Diploma exams, basketball tournaments, badminton nets, Skills Canada, Field trips, PATs and locker cleanouts.
Some landmarks though are a gradual thing. The parking lot is one of that kind. When I first look out at the lot in September there are lots of spaces, then as the year progresses a few areas start to have cars and trucks side by side, and then there are only a handful of spaces left, then one or two empty and finally none at all before the students have to start parking down the street.
This filling lot is also a reminder of the number of young drivers getting on the road. So with this in mind we have a presentation on Monday from the local RCMP detachment on impaired driving for our grade 9-12, and a few select grade 8 students with their learners permit. The hope is always that this will never cross a student's mind, but to reinforce this good decision we hope the presentation will add a little more to their rationale for making it.
As always, if you choose for your student to not participate there is an opt out form available online.

This year TJSHS is partnered with PC Financial for the Power Full Kids program. They are our major sponsor of our breakfast and lunch programs that we run here at the school. In order to support their mission, we will feature nutrition and cooking tips throughout this semester. First up - healthy eating and cost saving tips!
Cook at home. Eating at restaurants or getting take-out means you are not in control of what’s in your meal or how it’s prepared. If you cook at home you can ensure that your meal is healthy. Those expensive groceries are marked up further in restaurants!
Cook with basic ingredients. This means starting with whole foods like raw vegetables and fruits, proteins, and whole grains, and making food from scratch. That way you know you’re eating food in its natural state, without anything added.
Avoid cooking at high temperatures. If you grill or pan-fry meat at high temperatures, chemicals called can form on the meat that can hurt your body.
Avoid deep frying. Deep frying also causes chemicals to form on your food. Many people have moved towards air fryers in their homes to help make cooking healthier. Additionally, if people are preparing meals separately, this is an excellent way to cook!
Use low-fat cooking methods like boiling or steaming. If you boil or steam food, you avoid the chemicals created by high temperatures and cut out extra fat.
Eat to satisfaction. Avoid overeating and eat only what you are hungry for during each meal. This can be difficult for people as they don't like to waste food. Leftovers can be used for lunch or repurposed into another meal to prevent waste.
Minimize processed foods. Processed and packaged foods, like frozen meals or jars of pasta sauce, usually have more salt and sugar. Packaged foods also often have other chemical preservatives and additives.
Add vegetables and fruits. If you use more fresh, or even frozen produce, you immediately increase the amount of healthy nutrients in your food. Canned vegetables should be purchased carefully, go for the low-sodium and no-added-sugar varieties. Frozen vegetables are often the freshest as they are frozen immediately following harvest.
Flavoring with herbs, spices, onions, garlic and citrus. These ingredients give you food that’s packed with flavor without any of the downsides of salt and sugar. Many of them also come with extra antioxidants, which help your body fight disease.
Reduce salt. Eating too much salt is linked to numerous health problems.

Vaping is of particular concern, not only at our school but in schools across the world. Our hope is that together with parents and other stakeholders we can increase knowledge of the effects of vaping and, by doing so, reduce their consumption
I have included links to several resources below as well as a link to our statement of fair notice regarding the consequences for failing to adhere to the rules related to illegal substances I have outlined above.
