This week I wanted to highlight our School Council and some of the things they do for our school. These dedicated folks are committed to improving the school experience for our students through their input on school matters and the work they do via their fundraising group.
Through the funds they've raised from the community we have been able to subsidize and support so many of the things that create enduring memories for our students. In one way or another all of the field trips the students have taken this year have benefited from School Council's and, by extension, your generosity, through your support of school fundraisers.
Most recently the School Council approved a donation to the costs of our Grade 9 class going to Camp Warwa on June the 11th (no doubt if you have a grade 9 they have told you all about it... just in case they haven't though, forms and full details will follow next week via the parent portal). This donation made a significant difference to the cost of the trip and is a great demonstration of how your support is put to great use.
So, if getting involved with School Council is something you'd like to do, please come along and see what it's all about at our next meeting, May 13th at 5:15 in the school.
We'll see you there!
Summer School 2024
Summer school registration will open April 27, 2024 at 9am.
Students are eligible to take one core course in summer school.
Registration occurs through the Parent Portal of Power School.
Classes are offered in two formats: Classroom Based and Modular Based (independent work). Both have a $25 non-refundable program fee.
For Classroom Based, the courses will run Monday through Friday, July 2- July 26, 2024 at Leduc Composite High School from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Note: PE 10 will start on July 1, 2024)
As these courses are condensed, students are expected to attend all 80 hours of in-class instruction. They should also expect to complete one to two hours of homework each afternoon in order to keep up with the pace of instruction.
For additional information and courses offered, please visit the Black Gold Summer School Website
On Wednesday May 8, 2024 our Grade 9-11 students have the opportunity to attend the Skills Alberta competition in which High School and Post-Secondary students compete in various trades. Students will have a chance to explore and experience new skills they may not otherwise have a chance to see. Competition areas include: automotives, machining, photography, culinary arts, robotics and more. In addition to exploring, there will be multiple “Try-A-Trade” and “Try-A-Skills” stations for hands-on learning. There will be numerous industry and education exhibitors there to offer their knowledge and advice on career and education opportunities, such as Olds College, MacEwan, CLAC and Epcor to name a few.
This is a great opportunity for students to begin thinking about their path after high school. If students are interested in an area not available to them within our school, they can see Mrs. Hrytsak or Mr. Hodges to see if there are opportunities available to them.
More information can be found on the Skills Alberta website at https://skillsalberta.com/. Any additional questions about the field trip can be directed to Ms. Enseleit at tayler.enseleit@gshare.blackgold.ca
What Is an Energy Drink?
A beverage that typically contains large amounts of caffeine, added sugars, other additives, and legal stimulants such as guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine. These legal stimulants can increase alertness, attention, energy, as well as increase blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing.
These drinks are often used by students to provide an extra boost in energy. However, the stimulants in these drinks can have a harmful effect on the nervous system.
Some Potential Dangers of Energy Drinks
Dehydration (not enough water in your body)
Heart complications (such as irregular heartbeat and heart failure)
Anxiety (feeling nervous and jittery)
Insomnia (unable to sleep)
Poor learning/poor performance in school
Increases chance of addiction
How much is too much?
The American Association of Paediatricians recommends a maximum of 100 mg of caffeine per day (the equivalent of a small cup of coffee). However, many encourage no caffeine for developing brains. Most energy drinks well exceed this amount.

Vaping is of particular concern, not only at our school but in schools across the world. Our hope is that together with parents and other stakeholders we can increase knowledge of the effects of vaping and, by doing so, reduce their consumption
I have included links to several resources below as well as a link to our statement of fair notice regarding the consequences for failing to adhere to the rules related to illegal substances I have outlined above.
