Basketball
A big congratualations to the Senior Girls Basketball team for winning the silver medal at this year's Zone Championships.
A big shout out to Shaelee, Aurora, Ava, and Lil for being the scorekeepers at the Zone Tournament. You all did an amazing job! And a second shout out to everyone that showed up to watch the games. The turnout was awesome!
Badminton
Badminton season is just around the corner. We will be starting practice right away and those practitces will take place at lunch. Junior High School students can compete in a one day tournament at various venues in Leduc (depending on what their age category is) and the Senior High students have the opportunity to compete in Edmonton at the Saville Center in April. The goal this year is to get as many people wanting to play badminton as possible. If your child is interested, tell them to come and check it out.
Over the course of semester two, we will be looking at different areas of wellness throughout the school. March is Nutrition month and so we will feature some ideas around that area. Here at TJSHS, Mr Feil has taken on the Wellness role and is trying to get as many people involved as possible. Keep your eye on the Wellness Beat section for Wellness ideas and information.
Nutrition
One of the things we will be doing this month is another food bank drive. I know we did one around the holidays and it was extremely successful, but people in need aren't just in need during the holidays. We can help by running another food drive and donating what we can to those in need. The rules will be the same as last time. People can donate items to the food bank and those items will be assigned points. The house with the most points at the end will gain 3 house points, second most will gain 2 house points, and third most will gain one house point. Last time it got pretty competitive and people did an amazing job bringing in whatever they could.
Random Nutrition fact
Did you know...
After a workout or exercise of some sort, it is important to refuel with fluids, electrolytes, carbs, and proteins within 15-60 minutes. Things you can try - smoothies made with yogurt and frozen berries - graham crackers with peanut butter - low fat chocolate milk - bananas.
Give it a try!
Make yourself a healthy smoothie in the morning. You can pack it full of nutritious and delicious ingedients to start your day off right. Try adding things like flax seeds, chia seeds, or hemp heart. Add veggies like kale or spinach. Add fruit like bananas, oranges, or frozen berries. Put peanut butter into your smoothies. Try putting yogurt in the smoothie. Sometimes getting your daily dose of fruit and veggies in the morning can make us feel great for the rest of the day. It is also important to give your body fuel for the day by eating a breakfast of some sort. Might as well give it a try!
Until Spring Break, the students will have a chance to take part in a nutritio BINGO activity where they will have to complete nutrition tasks in order to get a BINGO. If a student gets an entire card filled out they can get it signed by a teacher and hand it in to the office to be entered to win prizes. They are also competing for house points. The house with the most members to finish a BINGO card will win their team a point.
