It has certainly been a busy week here at TJSH, including (but not limited to) our surprise evacuation on Wednesday!
When we are in evacuation status, it is imperative that we are able to account for all of our students and staff. As such, if you would like your student to be released from the evacuation site, we can only do so through controlled release.
What is a controlled release?
Controlled release is when we are in an evacuation and a parent or listed guardian arrives to pick up the student. in order to pick up the student, the person picking up must fill out a form and provide government ID before we will release the child. When we are evacuated, phone calls will not suffice as a means of letting a student go, especially when emergency crews are on scene. The controlled release is a function of our division wide emergency system Hour Zero.
Please note: there has been a change to Biology 20 as it was conflicting with Chemistry 30.
For final exams, diplomas and PATs must be written on the assigned days. Alternate dates are not available for these exams.
If a student is scheduled for an exam they are unable to write, please contact Mrs. Hrytsak at the school or via email (trish.hrytsak@gshare.blackgold.ca) to make alternate arrangements.
Exams must be written prior to summer vacation
The form that allows Junior High students to leave after their exam is up on Power School. Students without the form signed are expected in Study Hall for the afternoon
For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
National Aboriginal Day, now National Indigenous Peoples Day, was announced in 1996 by then Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc, through the Proclamation Declaring June 21 of Each Year as National Aboriginal Day. This was the result of consultations and statements of support for such a day made by various Indigenous groups:
in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, now the Assembly of First Nations, called for the creation of National Aboriginal Solidarity Day
in 1995, the Sacred Assembly, a national conference of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people chaired by Elijah Harper, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples
also in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day
On June 21, 2017, the Prime Minister issued a statement announcing the intention to rename this day National Indigenous Peoples Day.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is part of the Celebrate Canada program, which also includes Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27 and Canada Day on July 1.
The Government of Canada provides funding opportunities for community celebratory events, as well as for commemorations on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
On this day there are no examinations scheduled and TJSHS is open offering educational activities centred around recognising this day.
We have also provided activities online via Google Classroom which can be accessed using the classroom code provided below.

Vaping is of particular concern, not only at our school but in schools across the world. Our hope is that together with parents and other stakeholders we can increase knowledge of the effects of vaping and, by doing so, reduce their consumption
I have included links to several resources below as well as a link to our statement of fair notice regarding the consequences for failing to adhere to the rules related to illegal substances I have outlined above.
