Sabre News
Klaassen Corner
Sabre Families,
This last week the water has been running in the streets by my house as the spring sunshine melts the snow away. I have begun considering putting away my skis and getting my bike ready to go, but in reality, this is a time of year when I feel a bit stuck between sports this time of year. This leads to spending a bit more time woodworking, which is just as good for my soul. Over the last few days, I have heard about a lot of Spring Break plans, some are grandiose and some are humble, but all come with a smile. Whatever you end up doing, I encourage you to enjoy some smiles, some time with those you love and a bit of time outside in the sun.
At school, Spring Break represents a bit of a shifting point as well. From an office perspective, we begin planning for the following year in earnest. In the classroom, the final third of the school year begins after the break and teachers are focused on putting the final touches on classroom learning before the end of the year. As we do all of these things, should you have any plans for next year (planning to move etc.) that may affect the school, it would be very much appreciated if you let the school know! Even if it hasn't been solidified yet, it will help us plan for both the end of the year and next year! Just give us a call at 780-789-3983 or an email at tjshs@blackgold.ca. Enjoy the break!
Respectfully,
Justin Klaassen

Badminton
Badminton season is just around the corner. We will be starting practice right away and those practitces will take place at lunch. Junior High School students can compete in a one day tournament at various venues in Leduc (depending on what their age category is) and the Senior High students have the opportunity to compete in Edmonton at the Saville Center in April. The goal this year is to get as many people wanting to play badminton as possible. If your child is interested, tell them to come and check it out.
Track and Field
Once the snow clears and the field is not a puddle, we will begin track and field.
Senior highs will have a track meet on May 25 in Edmonton and the Juniors will do their annual Thorsby Track Meet followed by our top athletes moving on to compete in Leduc.
The Wellness Beat
Over the course of semester two, we will be looking at different areas of wellness throughout the school. March is Nutrition month and so we will feature some ideas around that area. Here at TJSHS, Mr Feil has taken on the Wellness role and is trying to get as many people involved as possible. Keep your eye on the Wellness Beat section for Wellness ideas and information.
Nutrition
Please donate to the food bank drive. We will be collecting donations in April as well. The team that gets the most points wins house points.
Please see the items list below.
March Food Drive
One of the things we will be doing for the next month is another food bank drive. I know we did one in December and it was extremely successful, but people in need aren't just in need during the holidays. We can help by running another food drive and donating what we can to those in need. The rules will be the same as last time. People can donate items to the food bank and those items will be assigned points. The house with the most points at the end will gain 3 house points, second most will gain 2 house points, and third most will gain one house point. Last time it got pretty competitive and people did an amazing job bringing in whatever they could.

Nutrition BINGO
Until Spring Break, the students and staff had the chance to take part in a Nutrition Bingo card competition. They had to complete tasks that had to do with making nutritionally healthy choices or just choices to modify their current nutritional choices. Students and staff just need to complete the full bingo card and get it handed into the office to be entered into a draw for prizes. An added bonus for this one was whichever house team got the most completed bingo cards in would win spirit points. We will be counting this up after the break.
Growing Smiles Fundraiser
Our Student Union is selling summer flowers using the Growing Smiles Fundraiser. These plants are historically healthy and long lasting. Well worth your money! Please consider supporting our Student Union. Orders are due April 25 and will be available for pick up on May 9.
Check out the link here.
STEM Day
On March 13 some of our Junior High students spent the day at West Haven for a Girls in STEM Day. The day was filled with speaker Natalie Panek who is working on the Mars space rover, pneumatics challenges, games about ecosystems and coding micro bits for the environment. What an exciting day!"
Subway and Hot Lunch
Subway subs are available for $5.50 every Wednesday. Orders must be placed and paid for before 10:00am on Monday. Order forms are on your child's Powerschool.. Parents can now order for more than one week at a time. Order forms are available through the end of April.
This year, the Elementary has once again invited us to partake in their hot lunch program. Menu items are posted weekly in our weekly news memo. All items are $4.00. We will also accept TES lunch tokens. Hot lunch coupon forms are now available on Power School. They are available to purchase singularly or in groups of 5, 10, 20 and 30.
Badminton Intramural
This year we did a double elimination badminton tournament.
We had almost 40 students and staff sign up for the tournament as individuals or doubles teams.
The final games of the tournament will take place on the Wednesday after the break!
This has been a really awesome intramural because people who didn't sign up are coming out to watch and support their friends!
Remember that if you enjoyed the badminton tournament, make sure you join the school badminton team as well.
Staff Versus Students Basketball Game
On Thursday the staff took on the Senior Boys and Girls basketball teams in a game in front of the rest of the student body.. The staff came out to play with a 19-5 first half. But the students did not back down and at one point they closed the gap by going on a 10-0 run of their own.
The students did everything they could to beat the staff, Rylin Klatt even blocked Mr. Verge!!! WOW! But sadly, the students could not mount a full come back and the staff took the game back in the fourth quarter.
We had the sabre mascot out and we had Flynn Scheetz do a little hyping up of the crowd by sinking a half time half court shot.
All in all it was a spectacular afternoon!
Parent Council
Our Parent Council meets monthly at the school. All parents of students enrolled at our school are welcome to attend.! Our next meeting will be held on Monday, April 17 at 7:00 pm.
