I must say that the last few weeks have been a blur for me having stepped in to cover a leave for Mr. Dykstra after our fall break. Some of you will know that at one point I was a teacher at Thorsby Jr/Sr High and I must say that I returned with some trepidation knowing that I had changed since leaving and so had the school. That said, it has been truly a pleasure to be back in Thorsby. While I was worried that change would make returning difficult, I soon realized that many things had stayed the same. There still exists a fabulous small school culture within the building where teachers know students and care about their well-being. I can still feel the resilience that exists within these Thorsby students and I appreciate the smiles and laughter that fill the halls. Warming them even while it is cold outside, and it was cold outside this week.
Over the break, I'm sure that many of you have plans already made - mine include as much family time as I can fit in. I think my appreciation of family time became most distinct when I lived in Japan where email and phone calls were the closest things I had to family time. Further, while the idea of the Christmas season pops up at times in Japan, come the day, it is just another day at the office. For the real celebration, one looks to New Year! New Year celebrations were glorious! When I came back to Canada, I was reminded that not all people celebrated the way I had growing up. I try to remind myself of this every year as my excitement grows for the season. Part of this is also reminding myself that not all people find as much comfort in family as I do, and in fact, sometimes could use a bit of connection outside of family time. I also think about how many do not celebrate Christmas and perhaps look at the season with a bit of curiosity as others celebrate together.
Over the last few years, our environment has, in many ways, required us to think outside of ourselves and reaffirm our commitment to the Mosaic that is our Canadian culture. With this in mind, I would like to send out thoughts of a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and an excellent December Break to Thorsby families. I look forward to seeing everyone back in January!
Respectfully,
Justin Klaassen
As the excitement for the holidays build, many families are ready for what they consider to be the happiest time of the year; family, friends, good food, gifts and making memories is something so many look forward to embracing.
However, for some, the holidays are filled with stress, anxiety, emotional triggers and a sense of loss or emptiness. For some, the holidays are not a source of joy and sometimes the pressure to create joy is overwhelming.

We've enjoyed a floor hockey tournament through all of December at lunch time. The winning team, the Dusters, got to compete against the teachers. Unfortunately, they came up short! Members of the winning team consisted of Austin S, Mason G, Blake M and Tyce R. The teacher team mates were Mr. Feil, Mr. Gourley , Mrs. Witteman and Mr. Verge
Even though it was an extremely cold week, we still managed to enjoy our week before the Holiday break. We made gingerbread houses and played some fun Minute to Win it games with Cherie and Angela. They also brought in a photo booth with props! We had an ugly Christmas sweater day on Tuesday. Thursday was Pajama Day--one of our favorite days of the year! This year we brought back door decorating--so much creativity in our school. Congratulations to our White house who had the best door!
