Important Reminders
September 25 – Terry Fox Walk
September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
We read "The Important Book" by Margaret Wise Brown to learn about the main idea of a story. After reading this story for whole group instruction, I asked the students to identify some patterns that they recognized. I wanted them to realize on each page was a different object, the author was stating why the particular object was important (main idea), and providing extra details about the object. We used this as a time to remember what main idea was and why details are important. Then I passed out a chocolate chip cookie to each student and as a class we made a bubble map about the chocolate chip cookie. Of course, we ate the cookies as we brain stormed! It was very important we could identify and discuss their taste!
This week we read the story "The Dot" written by Peter Reynolds and then we discussed the significance of International Dot Day. This is a day to embrace individuality and acknowledge that we can all make our mark in the world. We discussed the importance of expressing our own creativity and having the courage to be different. The story also recognizes the value of relationships and reminds us that everyone is special in their own way.
