This week in math, our Grade 3 class had fun learning to count dollars and coins by using play money! Each student practiced adding up different amounts, making change, and recognizing the values of various bills and coins. Working with play money made it easier to understand how to handle real-life situations, like buying items and counting change. This hands-on activity brought a lot of excitement to the classroom, helping students build confidence in their money-counting skills.
After reading A Poppy Is to Remember by Heather Patterson, the students created haiku poems to honour the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance Day. They learned the haiku structure—three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern—and used this format to choose words that captured the significance of poppies on this day. Each student then typed their haiku into a Google Slide and inserted a poppy image as the background, making their poem visually meaningful. These slides beautifully showcase their respect and gratitude through both words and imagery, honoring the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
This week, our class created watercolor poppy art to display for Remembrance Day. Using red watercolors, the students painted bright, beautiful poppies, practicing techniques like blending and shading to make their flowers stand out. Their finished artwork is now on display in the gym, adding a meaningful touch to our Remembrance Day ceremony. The poppies are a reminder of the importance of honoring and remembering those who have served.
Congratulations to our 3A friends who flew to the next country by reading 500 minutes in our Amazing Race home reading program. Well done 3A readers!
Happy Birthday to our 3A friend who celebrated his special day this week!
