The staff and students at RBES participated in Orange Shirt Day to honor and recognize the Indigenous communities affected by the residential school system. In class, we explored several stories about Indigenous culture and the history of residential schools. The students then engaged in a meaningful writing activity, completing the sentence, "I can show others that they matter by..." They also learned about Phyllis Webstad’s powerful personal journey, hearing her story of heartache, resilience, and courage. A highlight of the day was joining a live Zoom session, where the students had the special opportunity to listen to Phyllis read her latest book, Every Child Matters.
Truth and Reconciliation Pointillism
“National Day of Truth and Reconciliation” will be celebrated on Monday, September 30th. To honour the importance of this day, we completed a pointillism feather project. The feathers symbolize a step forward, a new chapter in the ongoing story of Reconciliation. The students enjoyed learning about pointillism, a painting technique that involves small dots that form a picture, while recognizing the legacy of the Canadian residential school system.
Terry Fox Walk
On Wednesday, the students and staff at RBES took part in the Terry Fox walk in memory of our Canadian Hero. Thank you so much to the Devon’s Lions Club for donating apples and granola bars for the students to enjoy after the walk.
The students were so excited and proud to have raised $30 for cancer research! Thank you to those of you who donated Toonies for Terry!
