Dear GJS Community Members,
Now that Term 2 is underway, it's important to remind our students about the significance of staying focused and celebrating their hard work. Dedication and perseverance are key to achieving academic success. Let us encourage our children to maintain their focus on their goals and to appreciate their daily efforts. Every small step towards their aspirations is a victory worth celebrating.
Tips for Parents:
Create a conducive study environment: Ensure your child has a quiet place to do their homework.
Encourage healthy habits: Make sure your child gets enough sleep, eats nutritious meals, and engages in regular physical activity.
Stay involved: Attend parent-teacher conferences, Coffee Mornings, school events, and communicate regularly with your child's teachers.
Quote of the Week:
"The only way to do great work is to love what you do." - Steve Jobs
Warm Regards,
Howard Menand, Head of School

Her book was selected as one of the 100 works chosen by the Jakarta Library from thousands of participants throughout Indonesia at the Karya Raya 2024 event.
In addition, we held a general rehearsal for our Year 5 students, who are preparing to take their national assessments in two weeks. The practice involved logging into the system and answering content-based questions within a set timeframe, helping students become familiar with the test environment. This rehearsal aims to ensure they are comfortable with the process and prepared to perform their best during the actual assessments.
The learning continues in many ways, and our students constantly add to their ever-growing palette of skills, knowledge, and experiences, shaping them into well-rounded, lifelong learners.
Kind Regards,
Lavesa Devnani, Primary Principal

SECONDARY SCHOOL
Dear Global Jaya Secondary Community,
We have started our second semester with a whirlwind of exciting events and activities. Everything is ready for WWW next week, and these incredible learning opportunities are linked to two other core components of the MYP program: IDUs and SaA. Below, you can read a more detailed description of them. Tons of brainstorming, planning, teamwork, inclusion, and friendship have paved the way for our students to take real action in giving back to the community and applying their skills and knowledge to solving real-world problems—the true essence of an IB curriculum.
A group of students will serve as ambassadors of our school during the Regional IBAP Workshops taking place this weekend. Today, GJD proudly opened its doors to more than 300 IB teachers from the region attending this prestigious event. Our students will work throughout the day, welcoming and guiding the participants, as well as performing during the opening ceremony. A huge shout-out goes to our DP Coordinator, Pak Ram, for leading the team in organizing this teaching and learning opportunity.
The Student Council is in the final stages of planning the logistics for the Hawks Cup. This student-led event will take place the week after WWW and will include basketball, volleyball, and football matches, as well as our own MUN. The StuCo is also organizing the Halloween Maze and Movie Night on November 8, after school. More details about these two events will be published in our next issue.
As you can see, our students are the best representatives of the agency and ownership we foster at GJS. It is a pleasure to guide and support their initiatives. And this is just the beginning of the second term—fasten your seat belts because the mid-term break has given us all the energy we need to finish the semester strong.
On a final note, our ASAs Coordinator, Pak Nanda, is always looking for new and exciting ways to strengthen our program. To this end, he would like to gather your expectations, hopes, and ideas for activities that we may be able to offer as part of ASA in the future. Kindly encourage your child to fill out this form.
Thank you for your continuous support.
Sincerely,
Nelsy Saravia, Secondary Principal

To raise awareness about the importance of mental health, the organizing committee introduced a daily “Choosing Board” for advisors, featuring selected activities designed to help us cope with the stresses of daily routines and prioritize our wellbeing. Additionally, a large Coloring Corner was set up in Plaza A, where students and teachers can unwind and contribute to a collaborative masterpiece.
We encourage families to continue this important conversation at home, as addressing mental health is the first step toward ensuring we are all taking care of ourselves.
Upcoming Events
Week Without Walls
The time has finally come to embark on our long-awaited WWW journey! This event has been months in the making, as we've worked hard to ensure every detail is in place to provide our students with a wonderful learning experience beyond the classroom. During our assembly yesterday, we talked about how this trip is a chance to put our skills into practice, learn new ones, connect with each other, and enjoy new adventures.
We began the gathering with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “Your values become your destiny.” This was a reminder for our students to carry with them the values nurtured at home and school, like respect, honesty, and inclusivity, while always staying true to their principles during their time away. Following this, our Dean of Students, Pak Edi, and the Heads of Year walked us through a detailed presentation covering all the essential information—expectations, code of conduct, safety, dress code, behavior, and other key points.
We are confident that our students understand that having fun and staying safe go hand in hand to create lasting memories during WWW. We truly appreciate your support in reinforcing these important messages over the weekend. We'll keep you updated throughout the trips! Each day, the Heads of Year and chaperones will send a brief report with the highlights of the day to Pak Edi, who will share it with you via WhatsApp.
We request your support in ensuring that chaperones can focus all their time and energy on taking good care of our students. Therefore, all communications with them will be managed by the school. The phone number provided in the booklets is for emergencies outside of school hours only. Please do not hesitate to contact Pak Edi if you have any questions about the trips. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
At GJS, WWW offers an opportunity to develop our IDUs. As the name suggests, these units provide students with the perfect scenario and strategies to demonstrate interdisciplinary understanding by bringing together two or more disciplinary areas around a common concept. Students are encouraged not only to identify the connections but, more importantly, to apply the knowledge and skills developed in different areas to address real-life situations—whether solving a problem, discussing a phenomenon, or creating a product. It has been fascinating to see teachers brainstorming around common concepts and transforming them into a variety of learning opportunities. After the assembly, each grade level worked on their IDUs through group work, games, guest speakers, and team planning. During WWW, they will collect all the data and information needed to validate their studies. We will conclude the entire process with an exhibition on Monday, October 28. More details will follow in our next issue.
WWW has also provided an opportunity for students to engage in Service as Action, giving back to the communities they will visit next week. Different groups have organized fundraising activities to purchase materials and resources, which they will share with local schools and villages during their trips. Here are some photos from the Year 8 fundraising activity. This initiative aligns with our vision to develop lifelong learners who are equipped to participate in the national and international community as team members and leaders.
Are you, or anyone you know, a passionate individual who wants to share their ideas at our upcoming TEDx event?
Our theme is "Thriving on Turmoil." If you have a topic, you're excited about and want to inspire others; this is your chance! We are looking for GJS students, parents, and/or teachers! (For year 11/12 students: This could be a CAS experience!)
If you are interested and want more details, please contact tedxgjsyouth@gmail.com or DM our Instagram page: TEDxGJS on Instagram -- we hope to see you soon!
