Principal's message

Does anyone else feel like January was a really long month! The good news is that our number of positive student cases have been steadily declining. A big thank you to everyone who monitors your child's symptoms daily, obtain covid tests when symptoms are presented and being so understanding as we work through all of the changing information we receive daily. We ask that if your child tests positive, please email Ms. Cho or any of the office staff. We thank you for your continued patience as you wait for return dates from the Covid Response Team. They are doing their best to contact families in a timely manner.

We are looking forward to February: Black History Month, Global Play Day, Valentine's Day, President's Day and more!

If you have an incoming TK/K and an older sibling currently enrolled, please check the timeline for enrollment below. Share with your friends and neighbors as well!

I hope you continue to stay safe and healthy!

Ms. Johanna Cho

Principal

paws-itive behavior tickets

Have your students shared with you our new positive behavior incentives? We have introduced Paws-itive behavior tickets for students! Students who are recognized for demonstrating different positive traits are given a ticket that they deposit into our Paws-itive ticket box. Each month the tickets will be counted and classrooms that earn 20 tickets will earn a paw print to display in their window or classroom door. When a class earns 5 paw prints, the teacher will reward the class with some fun activity. I will also be selecting a few tickets randomly to come visit my office, pick a small prize from a prize box and write their name on the WALL OF FAME outside of my office door. We are excited to see so many students earning tickets, but teachers are NOT giving them out to ALL of their students each day or to those students who ask for them. I am certain a student will receive at least one before the end of the year. Since this is a new program, we may need to make changes as we see how things work. Thank you for your support.

Elpac Testing

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the required state test for English Language Proficiency (ELP) that must be given to students whose primary language is a language other than English.

State and federal law require that local educational agencies administer a state test of ELP to eligible students in kindergarten (or year one of a two-year kindergarten program, sometimes referred to as “transitional kindergarten”) through grade twelve (ages 3-21). Students are assessed in four domains of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The ELPAC is aligned with California’s 2012 English Language Development Standards, and is comprised of two separate ELP assessments:

1. Initial ELPAC – an initial identification of students as English learners. Students are given the Initial Assessment within 30 days of enrolling their student in FUSD. 2. Summative ELPAC – an annual summative assessment to measure an English learner’s progress in learning English and to identify the student’s ELP level.

The ELPAC Summative is given every spring from between February and May until students are reclassified as Fluent English proficient.

For more information on ELPAC please visit the websites below:

CAASPP

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, is the state academic testing program. CAASPP is a system intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career. CAASPP includes computer adaptive tests in English language arts, mathematics, and science. Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will take the computer adaptive tests in English and math in spring of 2021. Students in grades 5, 8, and an assigned high school grade will take the tests in science. If you would like more information regarding your school’s schedule, please contact your school’s main office.

Following the spring testing, students will receive individual score reports. Student score reports will be sent electronically to parents/guardians in late summer/early fall and will include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for English language arts, mathematics, science if applicable, and other information. If you would like more information, please visit the Parent/Student tab of the CDE CAASPP Web page. Parents and guardians have the right to exempt their student from taking the CAASPP assessments. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student’s participation, please contact Ms. Cho at jcho@fusdk12.net.
