This Week's Theme: Empathy!
Video Instructions & Morning Message
All week long, we will be learning all about empathy.
Empathy is when we "put ourselves in someone else's shoes" - or we try to understand how someone else may be thinking or feeling about a situation.
First, watch the video All About Empathy to learn more about empathy. Here are some key things to think about:
Remember that people have different feelings about different circumstances
It takes practice to understand people's feelings
Look at their faces and bodies to get clues about how they are feeling.
Think before you speak or act - how would this make the other person feel?
Then, check out one of the videos below! You pick.
The Sesame Street video shows some examples of empathy

Mindfulness & Our Feelings
Today we will think about identifying our feelings, and how mindfulness can help us to identify how we are feeling, so that we can use the "I" messages we talked about yesterday. (If you didn't get a chance to learn about "I" messages, scroll down to yesterday's lesson and see how you can use them!)
First, let's have a Mindful Moment. Play the MindYeti "Hello Feelings" video - you do not need to watch it, just close your eyes, listen and reflect on your feelings right now.
Then, I would like you to think about the feelings you just identified. This "I" statement could involve another person, or just you. These are just about identifying your feelings, and can be as simple as "I feel tired because I had a long day. I need to get some rest." Or, "I feel sad because my friend hurt my feelings in class today. I need to tell them how I feel, and I need them to stop being unkind to me."
Last, I would like you to watch the Case Crusaders video, to see some "I" messages in action. This is something that you can use in so many ways, so let's see how they use this great tool!

Practicing "I" Statements
Part of being assertive is talking about how you feel using "I" Statements.
First, take a look at the Assertive Communication Checklist below. Think about a time when you had to be assertive and stand up for yourself. Imagine yourself following the items on the list.
K & 1: Let's think about a time when we could ask for help by looking at the social story called I Can Ask For Help! Then, practice how you would ask for help from an adult. You can practice with a brother or sister, or a grown up if you would like to!
Grades 2 - 4: Think about a time you had to be assertive and stand up for yourself, specifically when someone was hurting your feelings. Picture it in your mind. After reviewing the Assertive Communication Checklist, craft some "I" messages to say to the person who was hurting your feelings. Practice what you would say if someone was hurting your feelings and you needed them to stop.

Fun Friday!
It's time for some fun after a long week! We have reflected upon a lot of things that we are grateful for. We will be continuing to think about these things that we are thankful for through next week, to Thanksgiving!
I've got a few options for you to choose from:
First, dance it out with the Thankful song! This is a great way to start the weekend with an attitude of gratitude!
Then, enjoy Kid President's "25 Reasons To Be Thankful" video. Are there any small things he mentioned that you are also grateful for? What do you notice about the things he chooses?
You can continue your Gratitude Scavenger Hunt by choosing another number on the list to search for.
Feeling like doing a craft today, or later this weekend? Make a Gratitude Tree! Print it out, or use this idea to make your own tree by drawing it. Write something that you are grateful for on every leaf. This is a great activity to do with others, so get your brother or sister, or grown ups involved!

Mindfulness
Gratitude and mindfulness go together really well! It is important to really pay attention for the small things in life that we are thankful for. These can be things in our home, or things in nature!
Try a MindYeti meditation, either "Hello Gratitude," or sit by a window and listen to "Thank You Nature." These are a great opportunity to close your eyes and take a mindful break.
Try this Gratitude Scavenger Hunt over the next few days! You could even do one a day. This helps us to take notice of the things that we are grateful for around us!

Learning about: Self-Talk
Self-talk is how we talk to ourselves in our minds, the messages we give to ourselves throughout the day. Having kind thoughts about ourselves helps with our self-esteem and can help us to handle stress.
Think of your thoughts like food (but for your feelings)! If you feel your body with healthy food, your body will feel good! If you feed your body lots of unhealthy food, your body won't feel so great. It's the same thing with how you think. For example, if you think use positive self-talk, thinking reassuring and kind thoughts about yourself and your abilities, your emotions will feel good! If you think negative thoughts about yourself, you won't feel so great.
For today, take a look at these Positive Thoughts and Affirmations. Choose one, or a few, of them that you think would make you feel positive throughout your week, and write them down or say them to yourself. This is your special phrase! Hang onto it in your mind!
Then, print out or draw your own Positive Self-Talk Shield! Fill your shield with positive self-talk statements or positive drawings of yourself that you can use to protect yourself from negative thoughts.

4th Grade Fun Bunch will meet today at 3:00pm! Hope to see you there!!

Mindfulness
When you feel very angry, or you're feeling another strong, uncomfortable feeling, it can be good to visualize a happy place. Visualization is when you use a picture in your mind to create a peaceful feeling in your body and mind. So get comfortable, get rid of distractions and be as detailed as possible while you use your imagination.
First, try the visualization and breathing video "Imaginary Hugs and a Peaceful Place."
Then, reflect on YOUR happy place! Where is a place that you feel super calm and relaxed? You can print this out, write it on your own, or talk about it with a grown up. This is a place in your mind that you can visit any time!
To finish, take a look at the Coping Skills Wheel. What is your favorite skill to use to handle strong, uncomfortable feelings?

Think about: What makes you sad? When you are left out of a game at recess? When you miss someone that you care about? Maybe when you lose something that is important to you? Talk about it with a grown up, and ask them what makes them sad, too!
Choose one of these read alouds to watch:
Take a look at the picture of the sad girl. Notice how she shows on her face and with her body that she feels sad.
Try the activity below! If you don't have a printer, you can talk about it with an adult or draw some pictures of people who can help you.

More Strong, Uncomfortable Feelings
Feeling Disappointed
Today, we are talking about feeling disappointed. Did you ever have big plans that didn't work out? Maybe you were going to go to the park to play outside, but it rained. Maybe you came close to winning your soccer game, but at the last minute, the other team scored against you. Sometimes, our plans change, and it is ok to feel disappointed!
First, watch my video about Dealin' with Feeling Disappointed. It has some good tips for how to cope when you're feeling let down.
Then, take a look at My Disappointed Monster. Think about how your body feels when you feel disappointed.
Then, try one of the My Disappointed Monster activities (linked). You can print it out to color yourself, or just look through them as an idea to draw on your own or talk about with an adult. Most importantly - think about the situations listed - would you be not disappointed, a little disappointed or VERY disappointed?
Finally, share with me a time that you were disappointed in the Google Form below. This is just for me to see! No one else will see your response.
4th Grade Cougars:
We will have Fun Bunch today at 3:00! If you need the link, email me!

Feeling Frustrated
Today, we will be focusing on the feeling of frustration. When we get frustrated with something, it is because things aren't going the way that we had planned, and it can lead to the emotion anger. Today we will talk about some strategies to manage our frustration.
First, watch my video Dealin' with Feelin' Frustrated to learn some coping skills for when we feel frustrated.
Think about a time that you felt frustrated. What did you do to calm yourself, to stop from becoming angry? What could you do next time?
But don't forget - it's Fun Friday!! If you've had some frustrations this week, dancing is a good way to relieve some tension! Dance it out to this Sesame Street song about emotions. You have learned a lot about emotions this week! Get silly and dance it out, and have a GREAT weekend!!
Kindergarten Cougars:
Please join me for an optional Kindergarten Fun Bunch today from 1:40-2:10! More information on my Fun Bunch page or email me for the Zoom link!

Handling Worries
Today, we are going to continue talking about handling our worries.
Listen to the read aloud of "Is a Worry Worrying You?" I love this book, because it talks about many different kinds of worries we may have, in many different places!
Take a look at the My Worry Monster slides, and the black and white activity I've included here. Write or draw something that happens in different places that worries for you. For example: "I worry when kids run in the hallway, because I don't want them to get hurt."
Then, write or draw something that you can do to handle that worry! For instance: "I can ask them to stop running."
If you're comfortable doing so, share with me in my Google Form below a time that you were worried, and what you did to handle your worry! (Only I will see this!)
Wilma Jean the Worry Machine by Julia Cook
Wednesday, October 14
Handling Worries
Have you ever had a worry? Have you ever felt nervous? What did worrying feel like in your body? Maybe you felt like your heart was racing, or that you were breathing quickly. Maybe you felt sweaty! Maybe you had the same thoughts circling around your mind. These feelings happen to everyone, but there are some things that we can do to stop worrying and feel more cool, calm and collected!
First, enjoy a read aloud! Pick one to listen to:
Wilma Jean the Worry Machine, or
Ruby Finds A Worry
Once you've done that, try one of these activities about worrying. These are especially good if you are dealing with a worry right now:
Arts & Craft Activity: Make a Worry Monster! You will need some things from around your house to make this worry monster, like an empty tissue box, some paper, scissors, glue and markers. Ask a grown up to help you make this worry monster! Then, write down or draw your worries, and feed them to the monster.
Writing/Talking Activity: Can You Control Your Worries? Draw two columns on a piece of paper, or talk this through with an adult. List some worries that you can control, and list some things that you can't control.
An example of a worry that you can control is "I worry that I won't do well on my test." You can control how much you study for the test, and how much you know the information. If you are having trouble understanding, you can talk to your teacher.
A worry that you can't control is "I worry about when Coronavirus will go away." We can do our individual part to help Coronavirus go away, by being safe and wearing a mask. But we can't control big things like Coronavirus. So it's important to focus on what we CAN control!
Optional: If you create an activity, you or a grown up can email me a picture to share it!
Tuesday, October 13
Read Aloud Tuesday
Today we are talking about feeling embarrassed. Can you think of a time that you felt embarrassed?
Listen to the read aloud of "I Can't Believe You Said That!" by Julia Cook.
Think about how the people in the story felt because of what RJ said about them. RJ would point out things about people that were rude to say.
How do you think his Gram felt?
How did his classmate's mom feel?
How did his sister feel?
Sometimes, when someone points something out about us in a rude way, we can feel embarrassed. What do you feel in your body when you feel embarrassed?
Take a look at My Embarrassed Monster and think about if you've ever felt this way. You can print the monster and color it yourself, or share with a grown up a time that you felt embarrassed, and how it felt in your body.
Then, watch my short video about Dealin' with Feelin' Embarrassed for some tips on what to do when you feel embarrassed.

Strong, Uncomfortable Feelings
Today's Morning Message
This week, we will be talking about many types of feelings, and focusing on ones that are strong and uncomfortable. We will learn some ways to manage these emotions, because everyone has them sometimes!
Enjoy the book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss, and think:
How do different colors make you feel?
What color are you today?
Are you different on different days?
Friday, October 9
Fun Friday
This week, we have learned a lot about being an upstander. An upstander does their part to stop bullying when they see it. Upstanders can stop bullying by saying something to the person, or by telling an adult. It's important to stand up to bullying in a way that is safe for you, to make sure that Copper Hill is always a welcoming place for all students to learn.
First, enjoy this read aloud of the book Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds, read by my friend and Barley Sheaf Counselor Mrs. Collins.
Take a look at the Say Something activity with the word bubble. Think about how YOU "say something," and then choose how you want to share:
You can write your answers down on paper
You can draw a picture
You can share with an adult
You can share with others on the Padlet! (Add your name!)
Last, complete my Week of Respect Check In to let me know more about what you learned, enjoyed and participated in this week!

Read Aloud
Today I'd like you to choose one of the read alouds to enjoy. You can watch all 3 if you feel like it! Each story is about accepting others, being respectful and being kind.
Once you've listened to one of the read alouds, complete my Google Form to let me know which one you listened to, and what you learned! Take a look at the questions I have included under each video if you need some help with thinking of what you have learned.
It's Okay To Be Different by Todd Parr. The author reads this himself and talks about all of the unique things about us that can are okay! My favorite quote is: "It's OK to be different. You are special and important just because of being who you are." What makes you unique?
Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller. This is one of my favorite stories! One question that comes up in this book is "What does it mean to be kind?" What does being kind mean to you?
The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson. This book is about being different. One important quote: "There will be times when you walk into a room and no one there is quite like you." Think of a time that you felt different than other people around you. Were people kind to you?

Fun Friday!
When we return to school, we will all be wearing masks. But the good thing is, there are some cool masks out there! They can really show off your personality, your interests, and your personal style! And most importantly, they help to keep you and others around you safe and healthy!
Let's design our own personal masks! Just because we wear a mask to be safe and healthy, doesn't mean that we can't have fun with it!
And if you want to listen to some music while you color, check out this song "Why Do People Wear Masks" by Jack Hartmann!
Options: You can choose and print one of the coloring pages below, or you can draw your own mask self-portrait!

Today we are kicking off a new mindfulness series called A to Zen! We are taking a trip to the "Zen Zoo" and we will be working our way from A to Z, each Thursday doing a different mindfulness activity together named after a different animal!
Today is - you guessed it - A! Join me in today's video as we visit the Attentive Alligator.
Make sure you have a comfortable seat in your chair, or on the floor. In this activity, you will be asked to close your eyes and just listen. Fun Friday!
With all that we have learned about growing our brains this week, and speaking kindly to ourselves, I hope that you are feeling very CONFIDENT!
Let's celebrate this week with some yoga!
Try the Brain Break yoga video! This is all about feeling confident! Put your computer away from you, but where you can hear it and see it if you need to. Then, follow along!
Think about the affirmation you liked the best. Keep it in mind to keep that confidence up! Write down, or draw the feeling your positive affirmation gives you!
If you have a printer, you can also color on of the Growth Mindset coloring pages!
Hang it up somewhere in your learning space, so you will see it and remember to always have a Growth Mindset!
Thursday, September 24
Mindfulness
Growth Mindset and Mindfulness are super related, because sometimes we can stop and notice the way that we think about ourselves, and the ways that we talk to our brain. Mindfulness is all about what you notice!
Swap It Out! Take a look at these phrases that you may have said to yourself. Think of the phrase that you can swap in its place, to have a Growth Mindset!
Take a Breath! Now, let's practice a breathing exercise. When these negative thoughts come into our mind, we can stop, take a breath, and be mindful. We control how we think! Try out Mind Yeti Slow Breathing.
Wednesday, September 23
The Power of "Yet"
Today we will be talking about what to do if we aren't good at something right away. What steps can we take to reach our goals?
Pick a positive statement to help with your Growth Mindset!
Then, make a plan! Think about something you can't do YET. Then, on the "My Power of Yet" picture below, think of the steps you will need to take to get to your goal! No printer, no problem! Just draw a ladder of the steps you will do, with your goal up top, based on the drawing below! You can write the words, or draw pictures!
Dance it out! How about another dance break? Take a listen to "Don't Give Up" with Bruno Mars!

Today, we are going to learn more about Growth Mindset, and being patient with ourselves as we learn something new. Video instructions here.
Watch this read aloud of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.
Reflect on the story. Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
Why was Vashti's paper empty? How was Vashti feeling?

Growth Mindset
Good Morning Cougars!
Click here for my Monday Message and instructions read to you!
This week, we will be learning about Growth Mindset, and how the way that you talk to yourself, and your BRAIN, can help you learn!
First, watch Dr. Nagler's Laboratory - the science is interesting! But I want you to focus on the ways that you can talk to your brain to develop a Growth Mindset.
Then, listen (and dance if you want!) to the song "The Power of Yet" - think about some of the examples they give of mistakes the characters are making.
Reflection: Is there something that you tried, that you weren't good at the first time? Were you good at riding a bike the first time, or doing math? Think about all of the things you have learned!

Fun Friday!
This week, we talked about what makes us each unique and special.
Think of a positive thought/affirmation that you want to repeat to yourself today! (You can watch the video, or take a look at the list!) These are to make you feel confident!
Now, think of all the positive things about yourself. Are you...
a good friend?
A kind person?
A great student?
A strong athlete?
Make a list in your mind, and draw your self-portrait! (below) Add some words to describe yourself, and draw your wonderful self!
No printer? No problem! Draw your own mirror and make it your own!
Feel free to email it to me if you'd like to share!

Mindfulness Thursday
Today we are going to calm our minds and bodies, and be present with our thoughts!
Want to know more about what mindfulness is? Check out this quick MindYeti video!
Try Mindfulness 5-4-3-2-1! Sit quietly where you are. Take notice of the things around you, and count down through each of the senses on the card. You can try it with someone else to see if they notice things that you don't!
If you want to close your eyes, you can listen to the You Are Unique meditation, and think about what makes YOU special!
If you want to move around, try this GoNoodle for relieving anxiety. This is great to do if you are feeling stressed out, or restless from sitting!
A "pennant" is a type of flag that is a long, triangle shape, like this one! You may have seen them with sports team logos on them!

My Favorite Things
Hey Cougars! Today I would like you to think about your favorite things. What is your favorite sport? What's your favorite team? Favorite food? Color? Season? We all have things that we like better than others, and that's what makes life interesting!
Start your lesson off with these positive affirmations. An "Affirmation" is a positive thought we tell ourselves! Pick your favorite one, and keep it in your mind!
Print or draw your own version of this "All About Me" pennant! (left) Include your favorites, and a self-portrait!
If you want to, email me your finished pennant! (optional!)

What are your hopes and dreams for this school year? What would it look like if you succeeded?
Watch and listen to the read aloud of "Dex, the Heart of a Hero." What are Dex's hopes and dreams? What is getting in his way?
Consider and complete these on your own:
